Now On To This Week's News!
In Memoriam
Gabriel "Gabi" Tolkowsky
Tolkowsky Remembered

The name Tolkowsky has been etched into the minds of anyone who has ever studied diamonds.

It is the family name of generations of diamantaires; diamond cutters, and diamond merchants, where two very special members of the family, Marcel, and Gabriel, have become diamond industry icons, who were able to cut diamonds in a way few others could, releasing the diamond's maximum inner beauty, and creating the most beautiful finished diamonds the world has ever seen.
Marcel, son of Abraham, who in 1919 developed the math that today encompasses what we now describe as the "ideal" cut, or in grading terminology, Triple Excellent, for the modern day round brilliant.

And Gabriel, "Gabi," who took what great uncle Marcel, and father Jean offered, and designed his own patterns which appear to have exceeded all expectations.

Creator of The Centenary, The Golden Jubilee, The Gabrielle, and The Flower Cuts.

The industry mourns the loss of Gabi Tolkowsky.

Messika Gives 25% of Company to Local Staff
"employees are the lifeblood of the organisation"
Good Business Practice

New Era Live - Namibia

In a recent article published in Namibia's New Era Live Magazine, Andre Messika Diamonds, a supplier of polished diamonds to the global luxury jewellery market, this week revealed it will be donating 25% shareholding in the company to its Namibian employees.

Important to Note
The operations director at Andre Messika, Marc Friedman, said the company believes its employees are the lifeblood of the organisation, and their hard work and commitment has propelled the company to new heights.

Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) CEO Alicia Amupolo added her voice, saying when employees have a stake in a company’s success, they are more likely to work towards its long-term growth and profitability. Fostering an environment that nurtures their talents is key to attracting and retaining high-quality employees, she observed.

Describing Color in Gems • A Fool's Guide
• Lotus Gemology
by Richard W. Hughes
Lotus Gemology

"What is the finest blue, or the finest red?" asks Richard Hughes, Lotus Gemology, Bangkok, Thailand.

"In truth, there is no finest color; that is a personal preference for each of us. But on social media, there is no shortage of pundits pontificating on the 'proper' color description of a gem, even when they have only seen a photo of a photo of it. How’s that for paranormal?"

In his report, Describing Color - a Fool's Guide, Hughes takes on the foolish elephant in the room, the ill-defined various color descriptions used throughout the colored gemstone industry today.

We got rid of those in the diamond industry decades ago. What happened to the colored gemstone industry?

$100 Million Gone in 27 Minutes
Insurance Value v. Declared Value
What You Think You Know

When sending high value packages, one is always told that the declared value on the package must (or should) be equal to the value of the items being shipped. You are declaring the value of the package for the full value of the items in order to cover the full value in case of loss.

In this case, a package was stolen, and Brinks offered to pay the customer for the declared value.

But the customer isn't taking the money. Why? (This is NOT a happy ending.)

Gems And Jewellery Exports Losing Lustre?
On Global Constraints, Muted Demand
Janani Janarthanan –
BQPrime – Bloomberg – India –

According to the report this week in Bloomberg's BQ Prime, the gems and jewellery industry faces a challenging year which is unlikely to improve unless demand conditions improve from the U.S. and European markets, coupled with the reopening of the Chinese economy.

"The data for April 2023—the first month of fiscal 2024—revealed a significant decline in gems and jewellery exports, reaching a value of $2.43 billion. This marked a sharp decline of 30% as compared with the previous year’s exports of $3.47 billion in the same category. Among various merchandise export commodities, the gems and jewellery sector experienced the steepest annualised drop in April, plunging to its lowest in 17 months."
