Join Westfield's LEGO TEAM
for students in grades 4 - 8
FIRST LEGO League Challenge is designed for students in grades 4-8 to participate in a friendly competition of research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering. Students will build and program a LEGO robot that will navigate a large game board with 15 missions to accomplish. No prior experience is needed!
Over the next several weeks, Mr. Jarrod Lewis, Middle and Upper School science teacher, will teach the team how to program their robot to accomplish various tasks. The team will brainstorm ways for their robot to activate the various components across the game board, allowing them to accomplish each mission. Ultimately, the team will program, practice, and re-program until they can accomplish as many of the 15 missions as possible in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This year’s theme is Submerged - check out the informational video below!
The official tournament season starts in November, and team scores will determine which teams are invited to compete at higher levels (local, regional, state, national).
Meetings are planned tentatively for Wednesdays and Fridays after school (3:00-4:30). If you and your student can commit to this schedule, please click on the button below to register with the FIRST league and agree to their terms and consent form.
| Fourth graders in Mrs. Shannon Reber’s English classes completed an "around the room scoot" to review sentences, run ons and fragments. Students used their answers to play notes on the virtual piano. If their answers were correct, they heard the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” #interactivelearning #westfieldfourthgrade #educationofmindandheart | Seventh graders in Mrs. Leigh Ann Champion's life science classes are studying cells under the microscope by viewing pond water droplets and hair samples. #westfieldscience #educationofmindandheart | Do the properties change? Eighth graders in Mr. Jarrod Lewis' physical science class conducted lab experiments to determine the presence of physical and/or chemical change. #handsonlearning #westfieldscience #educationofmindandheart | Upper School students in Mrs. Robin Leonard’s Honors English II classes are working in pairs, discussing theme, characterization, and heroic transformations in the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Students read the book over the summer as a part of their assigned reading for the course. #westfieldupperschool #collaborativelearning #reading #educationofmindandheart | AP Environmental Science students worked in groups to learn about four of earth’s biogeochemical cycles. #westfieldscience #collaborativelearning | First graders in Mrs. Karen Ray's art class are learning to draw through directed drawing. The students use their listening skills to pay attention to and follow the step-by-step instructions given by Mrs. Ray and then they use their creative skills and imagination to create their own art. Directed drawing helps students to build confidence, be creative, and have fun in art! #firstgradeart #directeddrawing #educationofmindandheart | |
Sixth graders in Mrs. Christy Mooring’s Christian Ethics class are focusing on kindness. The students wrote thank you notes to teachers and wrote compliments to their classmates and put them on or in their lockers. #spreadingkindness #educationofmindandheart

Getting involved helps students in many ways such as building friendships, growing in their faith, developing leadership skills, starting new hobbies, managing time, and serving their school and community. Our Upper School students spent time learning about different extracurricular opportunities, including our new Animal Rescue Club, at this year's Club Fair! #gettinginvolved #buildingleaders #servingothers #westfieldupperschool #educationofmindandheart
