Reasons to Remember - Memorial Day 2024

Memorial Day comes with the start of Alaska summer, planting season, and school vacations, but before heading outside -- or Outside-- take a pause with us this Sunday. Join Cassie Thomas and Marty Freeman for Reasons to Remember, an exploration of the long history and meaning of this special day, and reflections on why it’s worth honoring. There will be time for congregants to add their own reasons to honor Memorial Day and to recognize loved ones or personal heroes who died in military service.

Earthquake Drill Review

Linda McCool, Safer Congregation Team

Earthquakes are a fact of life living here in the Last Frontier. Most of us have felt them. Most of them are relatively small, but occasionally there is a big one. Imagine you are at AUUF in the sanctuary attending the 9 AM Forum or the 11 AM service with the room filled to almost capacity and you feel the building shake, not just a little, but a LOT. Would you know what to do? Please review the following information.

If you are in a sanctuary, auditorium, stadium, or theater, the steps are the same:

  • Drop: Drop to your hands and knees. If there is not enough room between seats or you cannot get down on the ground, bend over as far as possible. Those who are wheelchair users should lock their wheels and bend over as far as possible.
  • Cover: Cover your head and neck with your arms
  • Hold on: Grab a chair leg until the shaking stops. Do not run outside until the shaking stops to avoid being hit by falling debris. Close you eyes and mouth to protect against dust and debris.
  • Look: After the shaking stops, look around and above you to make sure the area is safe before getting up. It may be necessary to exit the building if there is a lot of damage.

Here is a link to a short video showing the earthquake drill procedures that we will be following.

Here is a link to a video showing what to do during an earthquake for people who have mobility challenges.

It’s always good to be prepared in case of an emergency, so remember to dropcover, and hold on!

Safety Reminder - There is a First Aid Kit on the wall in the social room near the kitchen. If you need Band-Aids, they are in the kit.

Lost and Found - Until May 28!

Have you lost something at AUUF? Or can't find something and think it may have been left here? Please check out the collection of items from these past months that are in the lobby upstairs, on the coat rack and in the boxes below. After May 28, they will be given to a charity.

Peace Camp is back! June 24 - 28, 2024!

Children & youth from 1st - 8th grade are welcome to participate.

We are looking forward to a week in our beautiful Alaska outdoors, rain or shine! Music, stories, Crafts, games and bike rides. Lots of fun for everyone. Adults interested in volunteering in some way, please contact Elayne Hunter, Annie Belts or Rosene Beachy.

And if you’ve been saving any of those giant coffee /fruit cans, we would love to take them off your hands.

Registration forms are available on the AUUF website as well as the RE Facebook Group. Early bird registration by May 1. Payment can be made on the AUUF Donations page.

WhaleCoast Alaska has been a successful and anticipated fundraiser for AUUF for many years. We host about 80 UU visitors from all over the United States in the two tours each summer. The dates for 2024 when guests are in Anchorage are June 15-17 and 19-20 and July 24-26.

Some of our AUUF hosts have opened their homes for many years, while others just had their first experience last year. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet some very nice UU travelers and show off a bit of our state to them. If you are not able to provide housing, you could help with providing food and setup for the banquet, driving guests, or maybe even hosting in another UU’s home if they can’t be there.

The Anchorage UU Fellowship receives $100 per person per night for a comfortable shared bedroom, breakfast, and transportation to and from the host home to the activity. Sometimes guests arrive early and stay with our hosts, or choose to pay double for a single room, earning us additional funds. In addition, we receive $32 per person for the banquet and entertainment we provide on June 16 and July 25. When we provide additional transportation between venues, we earn $5 per person per ride. Together, last year we earned almost $23,000 that provided a much-needed supplement to our operating budget!

For more information about the tours, visit www.WhaleCoastAK.org. On that website are the full itineraries, information about what to expect, and guidelines about traveling and health, including Covid protocols. All guests and hosts are required to be fully vaccinated (including boosters) against Covid to participate.
