Tlingit & Haida Receive Thank You from Southeast Alaska Trollers
|
Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to all of the Southeast Alaska trollers who signed a letter to express their gratitude to Tlingit & Haida for standing up to the Wild Fish Conservancy (WFC)!
In 2020, the WFC filed a lawsuit against NOAA to close the Southeast Alaska king salmon troll fishery. This year, they filed a petition to list Alaska king salmon under the Endangered Species Act.
The WFC’s actions continue to target Indigenous people and communities. With funding backed by companies like Patagonia, they have pursued an agenda with bad science, faulty narratives and knowing very well their actions impact Indigenous people and communities, as well as Treaty rights. If you own any Patagonia clothing, you might stop wearing it until they stop supporting WFC’s attacks on Indigenous people.
Tlingit & Haida supported two amicus brief filings in the WFC lawsuit to close the Southeast Alaska troll fishery. The first filing was submitted on behalf of 21 tribes and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) corporations and the second was submitted on behalf of 16 sovereign tribes, 7 Alaska Native Village corporations, Sealaska Corporation, and the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp.
The Southeast Alaska king salmon troll fishery is integral to our coastal communities and way of life. Many tribal citizens are troll permit holders who rely on this fishery. We will continue to stand against the Wild Fish Conservancy and defend Southeast Alaska trollers.
