Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2018

It's  hard  to  believe Dome stic Violence Awareness & Prevention Month (DVAM) 2018 is here! In an effort to highlight all of the amazing work happening around the state, and to help boost the efforts of our members and allies working to raise awareness, we've compiled  DVAM social media strategies online toolkits and resources , and a  calendar of events  occurring both around the state and nation. Thank you to everyone for the tremendous dedication you have to this movement, and we look forward to another great year of creating social change!

PARTICIPATING VIA SOCIAL MEDIASocialMedia
Words of Advocates & Needs of Survivors Social Media Campaign

For three years in a row, New York State has had the highest demand for domestic violence services in the country. But what are the needs of survivors? What do advocates highlight from their experiences working with victims?

October is domestic violence awareness month. It is a time when survivors come forward to share their stories, both directly and through the words of advocates. At the NYS Coalition Against Domestic Violence, we educate advocates, policy makers, and the public about victims' most pressing needs, both during abusive relationships and after they decide to leave.

Join us in sharing these stories on social media platforms.  Use the #NYDVAM & #DVAM2018 hashtags in your posts to highlight the amazing work happening all over the state to build awareness and prevent domestic violence. You can follow the campaign on our  Facebook  and  Twitter  pages where we'll be highlighting the work being done by our member programs across New York State to support survivors and end domestic violence.

Follow the link to view 2018 #NYDVAM "Words of Advocates & Needs of Survivors campaign" on our website.

Here are a few ways to use your social media presence to raise awareness about domestic violence and the impact it has on our communities, our state, and around the world.

  • Follow and share  NYSCADV's 2017 #31DaysofDVAM  campaign on all your social media platforms. Each day, you can share these statistics and facts and reflect the broad spectrum of experiences that survivors face every single day.
  • This year, for second time NYSCADV is participating in Allstate Foundations Purple Purse Challenge, an annual friendly fundraising challenge in October. We will be highlighting domestic violence awareness, prevention information and resources while raising funding for the support for critical programming that benefits the entire state.
  • Join NYSCADV and PowHer "Violence Against Women" Twitter Chat on October 18th, at 2:00 PM. Follow the hashtag #PowHerTheVote on twitter while we discuss various forms of domestic violence, victim's safety, economic justice and the importance of survivor's financial empowerment.
  • Change your social media profile and cover photos to Purple ribbons and other domestic violence awareness signs, slogans, and statistics that reflect your local work.
  • Join NNEDV's  #Safety4Survivors Twitter Chat on October 16th. Advocates will discuss breadth of survivors' experiences, including ways to address & remove barriers, centering marginalized communities, building resilience, and the road to empowerment.
  • Wear Purple 4  #PurpleThursday on October 18th and post photos of you and your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues wearing purple to raise awareness!
  • The  #1thing campaign from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) helps individuals and communities to articulate and understand how our collective "one things" can lead to the social transformation we all desire to see. Follow  @NRCDV and join the conversation on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook
  • NRCDV's My #1thing Twitter chat on October 24th: Join as we engage national, state, and community-based partners from across the movement to end gender-based violence to provide an open forum for sharing personal and organizational #1Thing messages that advance action for social change. Follow on Twitter at @NRCDV and participate using #1Thing.
  • Listen to "My #1thing," storytelling podcast series on NRCDV Radio; Thursdays in October: Throughout the month of October, NRCDV's Stories of Transformation podcast station will feature the unique perspectives of advocates, survivors, and other community members who have been impacted by and/or are working to end gender-based violence. Stories will offer "one thing" as a strategy for shedding light on the value of each action and the invaluable role we all play in creating the world we wish to live in.
RESOURCES & TOOLKITSToolkits
National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV)

This year, the Domestic Violence Awareness Project (DVAP) brings a unified message to #DVAM2018 that moves people from awareness to action and inspires thinking about how individuals can take small steps that lead to real social change. The #1Thing theme offers the opportunity for individuals and organizations to gather around a national unified message for DVAM and beyond. Throughout the month of October, the DVAP and its collaborative partners will be sharing personal and organizational #1Thing messages that advance action for social change. We invite you to participate by sharing what #1Thing inspires you.

Individuals and organizations can incorporate the #1Thing message into their own awareness activities campaigns by utilizing the tips and tools outlined in the  #1Thing Action Guide.

Telling Our Stories: From the Page to the Stage,
An Evening with Zoë Flowers

October 24, 2018

NYSCADV is pleased to present "Telling Our Stories: From the Page to the Stage, an evening with Zoë Flowers."

Like many young women, Zoë Flowers found herself in a dangerous relationship in her early twenties. The experience motivated her to become a catalyst for change. In 2004, she started interviewing women about their experiences with domestic and sexual violence.

From Ashes to Angel's Dust: A Journey Through Womanhood (FA2D) is the book that emerged from those interviews. Zoë, in collaboration with the The New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence will share stories from this intensely personal look at domestic/sexual violence and the road to healing. ASHES - a ChoreoDrama that uses monologues, poems and vignettes to breathe life into the original stories chronicled in Zoë's book and includes new stories about historical oppression, the media, campus sexual assault, body image, and the journey to self-love. ASHES has had many successful performances across the country. Additionally, ASHES is being further developed through Brown University's Research-to-Performance Method.

Zoë Flowers is an author, poet, actress, Reiki Master and seasoned domestic violence advocate. Her poetry and essays can be found in Stand Our Ground; Poems for Trayvon Martin and Marissa Alexander, and Dear Sister: Letters From Survivors of Sexual Assault and several online publications and journals.
