David Bernhardt, MD, receives Distinguished Community Service Award

Each year, the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association (WMAA) invites alumni to nominate their fellow alumni and, in some cases, faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health or UW Health to be considered for WMAA awards.

This year, professor and primary care sports medicine physician David Bernhardt, MD, received the Ralph Hawley Distinguished Community Service Award. Ben feels fantastic after two knee surgeries

After playing rugby in his native Scotland for over 25 years, Ben Delaney wasn’t terribly surprised when he experienced increasingly sharp pain in his knees by his late 30s. As a side business to his day job, Ben spends plenty of time on his feet as a “kilted cook” who prepares meals in people’s homes for dinner parties.

While swimming last summer, Ben felt a sudden “pop” in his right knee after pushing off the pool wall with his feet. After reviewing images of Ben’s knee, Dr. Andrea Spiker, a UW Health orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee and hip operations, took Ben to the operating room at East Madison Hospital. She removed the tear in the meniscus while preserving his healthy cartilage. Three months later, Ben returned to the same hospital after he learned that his left knee also had a torn meniscus.

"Dr. Spiker, the nurses, and the surgical staff were brilliant. I’ve been feeling fantastic ever since, and I could not imagine a better experience as a surgical patient."

– Ben Delaney
