The Tiger's Roar!

Tildenville Elementary School Community Brief

Thursday, September 8, 2022

Dear Mark,

We have already completed our fourth week of school and are nearing the halfway point of the first quarter. Teachers will post progress report grades this week and those reports will be posted to Skyward Portfolio on September 13th. By the time you see the progress report, remember that grades will have already started changing, so the best source of continuously updated information throughout each marking term is the Skyward grade book. If you need assistance with creating your Skyward parent portal account, please contact the school. (Two-minute video for parents on accessing progress reports and reports cards via Skyward.)

This issue contains a lot of still very important back to school information for our families. Therefore, it is a bit longer than usual, but please take the time to review it closely for anything that may benefit your child. I am very pleased with our start to the new academic year so far and this is due, in no small part, to our wonderful parents, volunteers, and local businesses. Thank you everyone for your support over these first few weeks and for reading this latest edition of The Tiger's Roar!

Community Support for Tildenville Elementary

A Huge Tiger Thank You!

We had an outpouring of donations come in from families, volunteers and businesses to support our students and classroom this year with classroom donations. We are grateful for every donation that comes in that helps our Tigers have a successful year.

Foxtail Coffee, AlleyCats Pet Service and Axum Coffee donated gift cards. Cut Ups Hair Salon and Fravel Brewer Orthodontics donated a gift for the staff. Belinda Plemmons, community member and Tildenville volunteer, donated school supplies for our Tigers. Thank you to community members and local business The McKee Group and Oakland Park Neighborhood for your donations of school supplies. Thank you Alina Williams for donating school supplies. Thank you to the Weisbecker Family for all of their hard work this summer keeping our garden green! They also worked hard to get the new sign in the ground to mark our beautiful garden. Thank you to O-Town Compost for the donation of two bags of compost to use in our school garden!

School Dates

How to see the school dates on the Canvas calendar:

1. Open Canvas through LaunchPad

a. Open your web browser and go to:  launchpad.classlink.com/ocps

b. Click the green “Parent Login” button at the top of the screen

c. Login to the Parent Portal using your email address and password

d. Click on the Canvas OCPS icon

OR

2. Download Canvas Student to your mobile device.

4. The Calendar shows multiple “courses” in a list on the right side of the screen under Calendars. Each course has a box next to it.  You can show all courses on the Calendar or turn off courses you do not wish to see. (For example, the title of the course shown above is “Student Body – Tildenville ES 2022-2023.”) The system will initially default to showing all courses available to you.  To turn off a course and not show it on the Calendar, simply click the colored box next to the course. An empty box means that the course is turned off and the dates associated with that course will be removed from the Calendar. Courses with a filled, colored box next to them will show dates on the Calendar in that color.

5. The Calendar is updated continually throughout the year so make sure you check back often. You can also set notifications on your device. These will alert you to upcoming events.

Classroom Spotlight

Science with Mrs. Ventura

Mrs. Ventura's first grade class did a quick activity with buttons, sorting tray, and a buzzer. They were sorting the buttons by properties of matter (color, size, and shape). Matter is everything around us! Once their group was done, they pressed the buzzer to signal Mrs. Ventura. Afterwards, each group analyzed their way of sorting.

Library Cards

Got your card? September is National Library Card Sign-up Month and Orange County Library System is hosting a School Library Card Drive. They’ve set a community goal of 1,500 new library card registrations! Students can get their own cards by using our school's unique sign-up link to register online. ocls.info/tildenvilleelementarycard

Closing image of the week . . .

In May, the Bloom and Grow Garden Society along with multiple businesses including Duke Energy, OCPS, FNGLA, TreeDiaper, and Agriform worked together to donate Pink Trumpet trees to schools in the west learning community. The tree was planted and watered by the Bloom and Grow Garden Society and our former 5th grade students. As you can see pictured, our tree is doing beautifully! You can read more about the tree and the 5th grade class on https://www.plantsmap.com/search/plants?q=tildenville%20elementary.
