Even If It's a Soggy One....
With Independence Day falling on Thursday, many folks in the Tiftarea are taking an extended holiday weekend. Unfortunately, Wednesday night's fireworks at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture & Historic Village were postponed because of the rains.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are likely to  continue on Friday, mainly after 2 p.m., with a 60% chance of precipitation. On Saturday, the chance of rain drops to 50% and is 40% by Sunday.
When Monday rolls around, there is only a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. As the work week begins, it is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 91.
But in the meantime, rain or shine, let's keep the holiday celebration going. As a Grapevine special, we share the following video from the History Channel about a few facts you may not know about Independence Day.

GOIN' PURPLE!
Ga. Firebirds Play in Lupus Awareness Bowl
Travis Pratt, Larry Dean to Attend
"Tift County Goes Purple for Lupus" this month, and on Saturday, July 6, the Georgia Firebirds minor league football team "goes purple" as they face the Bay Area Pirates of Tampa in the Lupus Awareness Bowl at Brodie Field in Tifton.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Tifton native Travis Pratt, recently creating a buzz on the "America's Got Talent" TV show, will be singing the National Anthem. And NFL Player and former Tift County High Blue Devil Larry Dean of the Minnesota Vikings will be hanging out with Lupus survivors and supporters.
Game admission is $8 and is only $5 with the purchase of a 2013 Lupus T-shirt, with a portion going toward the Lupus Foundation of America.
Lupus survivors will be acknowledged during halftime at the Firebirds game.
South Georgia Lupus survivors will be honored throughout July with various activities. Every Friday during the month, supporters are asked to wear their 2013 Lupus Awareness T-shirt.

2013 FARM TOUR
Tifton's Ag Research Projects Among Visit

Georgia Farm Bureau officials recently toured the University of Georgia Tifton Campus and previewed the latest research at the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

During this year's Farm Tour on Friday, June 21, officials heard from Michael Toews talking about stink bugs, Phillip Roberts chatting about the kudzu bug and Larry Baldree discussing the latest research in turfgrass, among other topics.
Baldree, a research professional, said, "I gave them an overview of what we do here as a (turfgrass) breeding program, where it started with Glenn Burton, and how it's progressed with Wayne Hanna and Brian Schwartz."
One variety discussed was shade tolerant Tift Grand bermudagrass, released in 2007. UGA turf researchers are hopeful a drought tolerant variety will be released in 2015.
Other features of the stop in South Georgia included plant pathologist Albert Culbreath talking about peanut disease, graduate student Jason Sarver discussing peanut management research, and agricultural research assistant Benji Baldree discussing cotton production.

ABAC Answers Questions on Monday, July 8
An information session on the associate degree nursing program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is scheduled 4-5 p.m. July 8 in the ABAC Health Sciences building.
Becky Arnold, nursing associate professor, said it is a good time to meet faculty and get  questions answered in preparation for a nursing career. Nursing faculty will be available to discuss the associate degree program.
"The nursing program at ABAC prepares students for the Registered Nurse (R.N.) licensure examination," Arnold said.
