AN AUTUMN WEEKEND
SEVERAL SEASONAL EVENTS MAKE A BUSY SATURDAY

Call it Indian Summer.

We are full throttle into fall, with Thanksgiving less than three weeks away, but the weather is still warm and bordering on hot. Temperatures have been the 80s, and some of us have kept our summer clothes handy.

But temperatures are forecast to fall this weekend by about 10 degrees, just in time for a Saturday full of local seasonal events.
Downtown Tifton will be buzzing with folks visiting the annual Artists' Market on Love at the Tifton Museum of Arts & Heritage. You will see artists at work, hear local musicians, meet local authors, taste local food -- and view a wide variety of handcrafted arts and crafts available for purchase.

The Artists' Market will be open  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 5, at the museum, 225 Love Ave.

Also Saturday, the annual Mistletoe Market will be open at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. It's not too early to get those unique gifts for Christmas. Many local and regional vendors will offer unique arts and crafts items, and special products and merchandise. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day, and concessions will be available.

The Mistletoe Market is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the conference center, 15 RDC Road, Exit 64 off I-75.

And another annual autumn event this Saturday is the cane-grinding and syrup-making event at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village. This is an opportunity to experience an old South Georgia tradition

The museum's Historic Village is one of the few places left where visitors can step back in time to see a mule-powered mill grinding sugar cane that is grown on site. The sweet juice pouring from the cane mill will then be transferred to the syrup shed, where it will be cooked down in a cast iron kettle to make cane syrup.

Costumed interpreters will explain the cane-grinding process and the intricacies of producing a delicious bottle of cane syrup. Cane syrup will be available for purchase in the museum's Country Store; c ornmeal pancakes with hot cane syrup can be sampled at the Gibbs House.

A hayride around the Historic Village will allow visitors to view such activities as corn husk doll-making at the School House, open-fire cooking and hear live folk music. The event will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Museum and Historic Village, 1392 Whiddon Mill Road, Tifton.

REP. HOUSTON EXPLAINS
SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL AMENDMENT

The most controversial state constitutional amendment on Tuesday's ballot allows the state to step in and make changes to schools deemed as failing.

State Rep. Penny Houston, R-Nashville, whose district includes part of Tift County, tells
HOUSTON
the Tifton Grapevine that there is misinformation circulating about the proposal.
She has written a guest column explaining the amendment and why she is supporting the governor's plan for creating Opportunity School Districts for failing schools.

"As an ardent supporter of local control, I believe the elected officials closest to the people govern most effectively and efficiently. However, this is not a traditional 'local government knows best' policy question. It is about children who will be forced by law to attend a failing school," Houston writes.

"As a legislator, I carry a responsibility to all citizens of this state, including children and taxpayers."

TIFTON & TIFT COUNTY RECEIVE A TOTAL OF
$1 MILLION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORK

Tifton Mayor Julie Smith and Tift County Commission Vice Chair Melissa Hughes
were in Savannah this week to formally accept $500,000 grants each from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for street and drainage improvements.

The awards were announced several weeks ago by the governor's office. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the funding to Georgia's Community Development Block Grant program, which the Department of Community Affairs administers.

'T.R.' COMES ALIVE ON STAGE
IN ONE-MAN SHOW

American icon Teddy Roosevelt comes alive on the Howard Auditorium stage on Sunday, Nov. 6, when actor Derek Evans performs his one-man show, "Man in the Arena," at 3 p.m. on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The performance is part of the ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series.

Evans portrays Roosevelt in this look at the life of the 26th president of the United States. He has played Roosevelt in performances at the White House Visitor Center as well as grade-school classrooms, museums and theaters across the country.

A veteran of more than 40 stage productions in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco, Evans received his bachelor's and his master's degrees from Northwestern University.

Dubbed "the most American American who ever lived," Roosevelt's colorful story goes big and bold in "Man in the Arena," showcasing all that Roosevelt held dear: loyalty and a just and honorable America.

Fiercely opinionated and powerful, he fought for the common man and never practiced anything he did not preach.  Roosevelt's favorite saying was, "do what you can with what you've got, where you are," although he is most associated with the saying, "speak softly and carry a big stick."

Evans, who wrote part of the play, said he touches on patriotism, self-reliance, family values, the conservation of our natural resources, along with everything you ever wanted to know about "The Teddy Bear."

Tickets can be purchased online at  www.purplepass.com/abac  or at 229-391-4895.
