Tifton Could Get New Senior Housing
A $10 million upscale senior housing project may be coming to Tifton.
At its workshop Thursday, May 16, Tifton City Council heard plans for the project on property at Tift Avenue and Highway 82. "I want to be part of this community," developer Ward Wight said. "This is a city that invests in itself."
 The planned $10 million project would provide an upscale residence for 30-50 people aged 55 or more. "We're going to deliver a great product," Wight said. He has planned 10 similar projects in Texas, South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi. The developers have a June 13 deadline to submit an application to the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing, making the project feasible, saying that notification of the community was made. They asked the city for a resolution of support. City Council requested more detailed plans before the developers' June 13 deadline. Wight said Tifton is comparable to Covington, Ga., in that it has a vibrant, active downtown business district and city leaders who make sure Tifton is a place where people want to make their homes. "If people don't stay here, I have to pay the bill," Wight said. "I'm not going to invest in a place where 10 or 15 years later, people don't want to live here." Also Thursday, City Attorney Rob Wilmot announced that he is working on proposed changes to theHistoric District Guidelines and Land Development Plan, specifically addressing lighted signs and banners in the Historic District. He recently shared proposed changes with City Manager Larry Riner, Bert Crowe, director of the city's environmental management department, and Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Herb Pilcher, along with Historic District business owners and home owners. The group meets again May 29 to discuss the changes. The next step would be a public hearing on any changes. Mayor Jamie Cater asked if the changes would still require Historic District businesses to go before the HPC to request approval of signs. When Wilmot said yes, the mayor responded, "That is the problem now. We need a quick, clean way of taking care of our commercial people." One businesswoman expressed dissatisfaction about the HPC being in control of decisions on behalf of businesses in the Historic District. "The only people who can serve on the HPC are people that live in the Historic District; business owners can't serve on the HPC," she said. City Councilwoman Julie Smith said people need to get their information from city officials not from hearsay. Another businessman said he has lost 40 percent of his business since being forced to take down his banners. Wilmot said he is comparing examples of Historic District sign guidelines from Salt Lake City and from places closer to home such as Valdosta, Albany, Athens, Moultrie and Thomasville in developing changes suitable for Tifton.

Blue Devils Take Field on Friday Night
The Tift County High School Blue Devils hold their annual spring scrimmage at 7 p.m., Friday, May 17, at Brodie Field. Admission is $5 for adults and free for students.
Coach John Reid and his staff are still rebuilding the team. Last year's Blue Devils had a disappointing 2-8 season.
The Blue Devils begin their regular season against the Westover Patriots at home on Aug. 30.

Free Screenings, Info on Saturday, May 18
A free Community Health Fair is being held 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 18 at the Tift County Recreation Department at 401 Victory Drive in Tifton.
Among free health screenings to be offered include blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol. For accurate results, it is suggested that participants fast, or do not eat in the morning before being tested.
There also will be information available on health by many participating community partners. The health fair is sponsored by Tift County, the Tift County Recreation Department and Tift Regional Medical Center.

Show Highlights TRMC Telemedicine with Ashburn Schools
The nationally syndicated news program "America Now" with Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic recently featured a story on Tift Regional Medical Center's
 telemedicine program with Turner County Schools in Ashburn. The TV segment notes that residents in some rural areas may have to travel out of town, miss school and miss work to see a doctor. But elementary school students in Ashburn no longer have that problem. Because of telemedicine provided by TRMC, students at Turner County Elementary don't even have to step out the door to see the doctor. Click here to see the "America Now" video.

Ga. Ag Museum to Hold Kids Camps
Children age 4 to 11 may participate in the Georgia Museum of Agriculture's Camp Wiregrass, a day camp program focusing on historical and natural resource themes.
Campers will explore South Georgia history and natural resources through interactive activities, games and crafts. First camp begins May 28.
