The Maine House has given preliminary approval to a bill to increase the state's minimum wage to $9 by 2016, with further increases linked to inflation. House Majority Leader Seth Berry (D-Bowdoinham) says the current $7.50 an hour just isn't enough to live on. Hear him.
Lewiston Police have charged six residents with welfare fraud as part of the crackdown announced this week by Mayor Robert McDonald. Police Lt. Mike McGonagle says more charges are expected. Hear him.
Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission officials say they hope they don't have to use an algaecide to prevent a fish-killing algae bloom this summer, but they want to be prepared. Auburn Water District Engineer Sid Hazelton plans to meet with state Department of Environmental Protection officials today to discuss applications for permits that will allow them to put copper sulfate in the lake if necessary.
A Massachusetts man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a Lewiston woman in 2009. 27-year-old Amos Don was found guilty of first-degree murder this week in the shooting death of 29-year-old Erica Field.
Lewiston School Superintendent Bill Webster is proposing a series cuts to the budget he originally recommended, hoping to avoid a more than 8 percent increase in property taxes. Hear him.
A bill to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Maine, and regulate it like alcohol, is heading to a legislative committee hearing. The bill, which now has 35 co-sponsors, would make it legal for individuals to grow as many as six pot plants, make possession of up to 2-and-a-half ounces of marijuana legal, and impose a tax of $50 per ounce.
The Great State of Maine Air Show won't fly this year. Organizers say they're cancelling the popular show because of the federal budget cuts due to sequestration.
