Sri Rudram or Rudra Prasna is a part of Yajurveda and is considered one of the greatest vedic hymns dedicated to Bhagawan Shiva. The greatness of Sri Rudram is referenced in different places in our Itihasa, Puranas, Vedas and also local folklore. The most potent Panchakshari Mantra of Bhagawan Shiva and the Mahamritunjaya Mantra for liberation form part of Sri Rudram. The greatness of Sri Rudram is in the fact that it can be recited as a part of homa, abisheka or archana.

  • Eleven recitations of Namakam followed by one recitation of Chamakam are called “Ekadasa Rudram”.
  • Eleven rounds of Ekadasa Rudram chanting constitute a “Laghu Rudram”.
  • Eleven rounds of Laghu Rudram chanting constitutes a “Maha Rudram”, and
  • Eleven rounds of Maha Rudram chanting constitute an “Ati Rudram”.

It is widely believed that chanting or mere listening to Sri Rudram has material and spiritual benefits, and alleviates sufferings of all kinds. One of the grandest ways of reciting Rudram where in the set pattern is repeated 1331 times is known as Maha Rudram which is extremely powerful. Maha Rudra parayana when coupled with Abhishekam, Havanam and Brahmana Bhojana makes it a Maha Rudra Yagam and is unparalleled in its importance.

During the ongoing Karthika Masa celebrations at the temple, one of the most auspicious worships - the MAHARUDRAM will be performed from Friday, Dec 1st to Sunday Dec 3rd.

Maha Rudra yoga will start with sankalpama and kalasasthapanam on Friday, Dec 1st at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec 2nd, we will start with Mahanyasam at 8:00 am and a group of ritwiks will chant Sri Rudram 1331 times, over two sessions. Mahanyasam will be followed by the first round of abhishekam while ritwiks chant Sri Rudra Namakkam and Chamakam. Round 2 will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The same evening Shasra Bilvarchana will be performed at 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec 3rd, at 8:30 AM, Ekadasa Rudra Homam will be performed. It will be a very powerful homa and will surely bring the Blessings of Lord Shiva to all attending.

Shiva Parvati Kalyanam will be performed on Sunday at noon in Sri Venkateswara Temple as the Grand Finale of the MahaRudra Yagam. All are welcome to witness this blissful and auspicious event!

Shasra Bilwarchana

Sat, Dec 2 - 5:30 p.m.

It is believed that Parvati Devi relies in the Bilva partra.

According to the Skanda Purana, the Bel tree grew from the sweat droplets of Parvati which fell on the Mandrachal mountain. From there the Bel tree emerged. Hence, it is believed that the Goddess resides in this tree in all Her forms. She resides as Girija in the roots of the tree, as Maheshwari in its trunk, as Dakshayani in its branches, Parvati in its leaves, Katyayani in its fruit and as Gauri in its flowers. Therefore as Parvati resides in Her various forms in this tree, Shiva is extremely fond of its leaves.

It is a symbol of Shiva. Bilva Patras are offered as trifoliate leaves. One bilva leaf if equivalent to offering a 1000 lotuses, says the Siva Purana.

BILWARCHANA

Ekadasa Rudra Homam

The Sri Rudra Namakam will be chanted 11 times followed by Chamkam along with offerings of Ghee into the sacrificial fire. Eleven forms of Lord Rudra are invoked and this worship is considered the most beneficial to overcome karmic issues bestowing positive energy and overall well being.

DAY 3 MAHA RUDRAM - RUDRA HOMAM

Shiva Parvati Kalyanam

Sun, Dec 03 at 12 p.m.

Shiva Parvati Kalyanam is being conducted at the temple during the auspicious month of Karthika. Shiva Parvati Kalyanam represents the union of Prakriti (the manifest nature-Parvati) with the Supreme unmanifest (Shiva), the union of the Jivatma with the Paramatma who are essentially inseparable as the word with its meaning.

ANNADANAM

FROM SAI SATCHARITA

Man must spend his life-time always in doing action, specially the karmas enjoined in the Shastras, in a mood of believing resignation to His will. Inactivity, according to this Upanishad, would be the canker of the soul. It is only when a man spends his life-time on doing actions in this manner, that he can hope to attain the ideal of Naishkarmya
