Leadership Meets with Legislators During Behavioral Health Week

Thriving Mind’s leadership, John W. Newcomer, M.D., President and CEO; Steve Zuckerman, Senior VP and CFO; Board Chair Paul Imbrone, and Board Secretary and NAMI Miami-Dade President Susan Racher met with legislators in Tallahassee for Behavioral Health Week in the state capital.

CEO Gives Plenary Talk

John W. Newcomer, Thriving Mind President and CEO, gave the Plenary Talk at the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine’s Focused Inquiry & Research Experience (FIRE) 14th Annual Conference on Feb. 17.

His talk was titled: “Improving Access to Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Services.”

Thriving Mind CEO John W. Newcomer, M.D., joined Susan Racher, Thriving Mind board secretary and NAMI Miami-Dade President; and the Rev. Lisa LeSueur, pastor at Coral Gables Congregational Church and Program Coordinator for NAMI Miami’s Suicide Prevention Program, to discuss a life and death epidemic and often taboo topic: suicide.

Black Americans and Mental Health

Mental health conditions occur in Black and African American people in America at about the same or less frequency than in White Americans. However, the historical Black and African American experience in America has and continues to be characterized by trauma and violence more often than for their White counterparts and impacts emotional and mental health of both youth and adults.

Opioid Awareness

Thriving Mind has partnered with the Miami-Dade County and the Bureau of Justice Assistance to offer opioid awareness prevention programs, as well as in-patient treatment in our area.
