read
Read this short article in Smithsonian Magazine about how the gay liberation movement challenged the politics of civility in the 1970s and 80s. Activists targeted homophobic public figures to draw media attention to inequality.
watch
Stonewall Uprising, a documentary from American Experience on PBS, is streaming now online. The film covers the history of one of the catalyst events in the modern movement for LGBTQIA rights. You can find educational resources about Stonewall here.
listen
Listen to this interview with New Hampshire writer Alex Myers, who wrote a novel last year about coming out as transgender. Myers also participated in a Community Project Grant last year for the “One Book, One Valley” community read in the Mount Washington Valley.
Memoirs, biographies, and other nonfiction works are some of my favorite genres to read because they allow us to better understand people and history through a story. Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario tells of common human experiences like love, failure, sacrifice, and commitment to family as Enrique travels from Honduras to the United States. I think if we all tried to empathize and understand other people's stories more, we would find that we have a lot more in common than not. ENJOY
