.Business Of The Week

1000 Pole Creek Crossing Sidney, Neb. 303-254-5825

Sidney Regional Medical Center has been named the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Week. On hand for the presentation were (front row left to right) Sam Ramirez, Brittany Chaves, Sandra Chancellor, Lisa Kesselring, (second row left to right) JP Wallace, Donna Phelan, Chris Estrada, Janet Hostetler, Jodi Dougherty, Hannah Blackwelder, Lucy Kropp, Margaret Meier, Angelia Bleck and (third row left to right) Rick Spearow, Connie Frerichs, Brenda Ransom, Evie Blackburn and Maria Stewart.

...Sidney Regional Medical Center (SRMC) began in the early 1950s. SRMC was started to ensure high quality healthcare was available for their rural population. SRMC is a non-profit critical access hospital and organization started by the members of the community.

...For over 70 years, this healthcare system has grown to provide health and wellness services for the members of the region. From birth to adulthood and all stages of life, SRMC offers an array of services and caregivers designed to address a growing amount of healthcare needs.

...When SRMC was founded, in the previous location, the need for care was growing and the type of services were designed around being inpatient or longer overnight stays in the hospital. Today most services provided in healthcare are considered outpatient, having little or no stay time.

...In 2014, SRMC built a new hospital that was designed to better manage the patient’s journey through the hospital. With ancillary services such as radiology or the lab located in closer proximity, the patient’s overall experience is enhanced.

...SRMC strives to be a resource and offers a wide range of services that include: 25-bed hospital, ICU, 24/7 ER and infusion clinic, Physicians Clinic, Specialty Clinic, Surgical Services, Walk-in Clinic, Mental Health, Rehabilitation Services, Radiology, Laboratory, Respiratory, Cardiopulmonary, elder care with an Assisted Living, Long Term Care (and a new building project was just launched in May with anticipated opening date of August of 2024)...learn more at SidneyRMC.com

...If there is a service, test, or procedure that might send you to the front range for care, consider contacting their team to learn if you can use local and stay closer to home. Call 308.254.5825 for more information, look at their website at www.SidneyRMC.com or check out their Facebook page at Sidney Regional Medical Center.

Retail Plays A Big Role

Sustainability has become a big concern for retailers and for good reasons. The effects of human activities on the environment are undeniable and the need to shift toward more sustainable practices is pressing. I held a panel with Ann Ruckstuhl, SVP, CMO, Manhattan Associates; Michael Relich, Co-CEO, PacSun; and Anna Vinogradova, Head of Global Sustainability, Wayfair at the Manhattan Associates Momentum conference. This wrap-up gives insights into why sustainability is essential and retails role in it.

Leadership Tours Businesses

Recently the Colorado Chamber’s Leadership Colorado cohort took a tour around Northern Colorado visiting six businesses across a wide variety of sectors. In Loveland, the group visited Lightning eMotors. CEO Tim Reeser talked about their process for converting gas commercial vehicles to being powered by electric batteries, and the future forecast of the EV industry. Visit Fort Collins hosted our group for a historical walking tour of downtown Fort Collins, followed by a stop at Horse & Dragon Brewing Company where owner Carol Cochran talked about their sustainable brewing practices and the partnerships between breweries in Fort Collins. The cohort sampled craft beers and heard from special guests Ann Hutchison (CEO) and Taylor Hayden from the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce, Justin Laign from Congressman Neguse’s office, Marshall Floyd from Visit Fort Collins, and Lauren Schwartz from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce. Participants put on their finest western wear and finished the day with dinner and a history lesson of Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch from Susan Jessop, owner, and a wagon ride on a perfect evening around the beautiful landscape of the ranch.Last week our Leadership Colorado cohort took a tour around Northern Colorado visiting six businesses across a wide variety of sectors. State Awards $27 Million In Grants

State officials awarded $27 million to 46 organizations Thursday in the first phase of grants through the Opportunity Now Colorado program that is designed to enhance workforce-development pipelines at a time of significant labor shortage across industries. Many of the grants focused on new programs to train teachers and health-care professionals, two sectors hit hard by pandemic defections that have yet to recover needed personnel. But several also went to organizations working with educational institutions to generate more employees in skilled trades like construction, and some recipient programs are aimed at producing the next generation of information-technology workers. The second-largest grant, for example, went to Western States College of Construction — a joint effort between the Rocky Mountain Mechanical Contractors Association, labor groups and construction firms to train students at eight centers statewide for industry careers. Having just graduated its first class of students, it received a $3.36 million Opportunity Now grant that will allow it to scale up by increasing recruitment activities through school districts and community organizations, hiring more instructors and re-establishing a pre-apprenticeship program to help K-12 students learn more about the trades.

Office Space A Victim Of Red Tape?

Almost half of real estate experts believe government regulations limit the ability to transition office space into residential units, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Future of the Office survey. The data comes as more urban areas and smaller cities are considering converting empty office space to other uses to revitalize downtown neighborhoods and add much-needed housing. But the conversion of offices to housing is more complicated and expensive than it seems. As the survey reveals, some of the barriers are physical—like layouts and floor plan configurations—but some are in the control of local governments, especially zoning/permitting and environmental regulations. The Chamber’s surveys finds that almost 46% of commercial real estate professionals indicate zoning/permitting is impacting their ability to convert office space into other types of real estate, with nearly one in four (23%) saying it is the most important.

Regulatory Gridlock

Are Franchises Finished?

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy employing 46% of all American workers. For that reason, it is absolutely critical that policymakers in Washington, D.C., protect America’s competitive small business environment. It’s all the more unfortunate then that Federal Trade Commission has expressed its desire to upend a successful business model that has allowed millions of Americans to run, start, and grow their own businesses.

Since the early 1800s, individuals looking to start their own business in America have benefited from a variety of offerings from established brands through the franchise model. Under the franchise model, individuals sign a contract with an established brand that permits the use of its branding and business model in exchange for an upfront fee and/or regular royalty payments. Many familiar quick-service restaurants, retail centers, supermarkets, and hospitality companies operate under this model. Franchises are an important element in the U.S. economy, with an estimated economic output of over $860 billion in 2023 and representing 8.69 million workers.

Franchises Ending?

Are Rules Harming Business?

America’s banking sector is an integral part of the nation’s economy. Companies of all shapes and sizes, across diverse communities, rely on the financing banks provide to start, run, and grow their businesses. However, federal banking regulators in Washington, D.C. may soon increase bank capital requirements that could harm businesses and by extension the American economy. These policy changes, known as “final Basel III” or “Basel III endgame “were developed back in 2017 by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) — a standard setting body made up of bank regulators from around the globe. These standards could do significant harm to main street businesses and the U.S. economy if banking regulators fail to make some major changes when implementing the capital requirement. America’s banks are overseen by an alphabet soup of federal regulators each with distinct but interrelated responsibilities, including setting rules requiring banks to hold a certain amount of capital as a means of protecting against losses on loans and investments. Here, “capital” primarily means shareholder equity and financial assets that fund lending and can be used to absorb losses. This capital serves as a buffer to help prevent banks from failing but comes with significant costs to banks, and by extension to their customers.
