....Northeastern Junior College was founded in 1941 as Sterling Community College, originally built and funded by the local community. The college was formed by a coalition of local educational leaders and interested citizens who began the process of forming a community college in this region. It was a vision by local leaders to provide college level education infused with the values of rural Colorado to the young people in this area.

....In 1950, the name was changed to Northeastern Junior College to reflect a larger service area. In 1997, funding was shifted from a Logan County tax levy to the state, paving the way for NJC to become one of the 13 community colleges in the Colorado Community College System, where it remains affiliated today.

....Northeastern Junior College has evolved significantly over the years, but the foundation remains a well-rounded education for our students, and service to our community by providing education and training in fields that support rural Colorado and the development of its citizens.

....Northeastern Junior College offers over 80 programs of study. Many are transfer degrees which provide the foundation to transfer to a 4-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Others are suited for a direct pathway to the workforce, such as our welding, diesel, and wind programs.

....The college also combines the two with many cosmetology students participating in business classes, for example, to support opening their own shops. The college enjoys providing the community with NJCAA sports events, theater, music and more, as well as venues for sports, meetings and more.

....Northeastern Junior College is located at 100 College Ave., Sterling, CO 80751. For more information contact them at 970-521-6600, websites: www.njc.edu, www.gonjc.com (athletics) and find them on Facebook at Northeastern Junior College.

Sales And Use Task Force Meets With Chamber

The Task Force is made up of industry, legislators, and state and local government representatives to look at policies to simplify Colorado’s complicated tax system. One of the largest pieces of policy to come out of the task force is the creation of the Sales and Use Tax System (SUTS) which is intended to further tax simplification. Rachel Quintana with Ernst & Young is the appointed representative for the Colorado Chamber of Commerce on the Sales and Use Tax Simplification Task Force. In her first meeting, she provided an important presentation on behalf of the Colorado Chamber and the business community to provide feedback on what is working in the SUTS system and what is not. Her insights will go a long way as the task force considers potential SUTS upgrades and marketing strategies going into the 2024 legislative session.

Shortage Of Temporary Worker Visas

Mike Zaffaroni, owner and president of the Liberty Landscape Supply, is ready to expand his small business, but the persistent worker shortage is stopping those plans cold. “The labor shortage has impacted our business more significantly than any other single factor in the entire 16 years that I've been in business,” says Zaffaroni. “It impacts our ability to grow at the rate that we want to grow.”  The small business, based in Jacksonville, Florida, depends heavily on foreign national workers here on temporary work visas—and there simply aren’t enough to fulfill business demand. “There’s not nearly enough visas available every year for all of the businesses that are looking for workers,” Zaffaroni says. “There’s no level of predictability as to whether or not we’re going to get those visas and the associated workers in the future.”

Worker Shortage

What Is Impacting Small Business?

Suzanne P. Clark, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Jeanette Mulvey, Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, of Small Business Product Company will be keynote speakers at an upcoming update on Small Business. Focus will be on the biggest issues impacting small businesses today, and how the U.S. Chamber is working on behalf of small businesses.

When Is "Old Sterling's" Anniversary?

History Cafe, originally scheduled for Aug. 30, has been postponed due to carpet installation in the High Plains Education Center! The new date is WED., SEPT. 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the High Plains Education Center and will discuss “Old Sterling.” This topic will begin the year-long theme of “Crossroads” as the museum anticipates the Smithsonian exhibit with the same name arriving at the museum for a 6-week exhibition in August of 2024. “Old Sterling”, as it was called, was first established about 4 miles north of present day Sterling in 1874. The town was named, established postal service, began a school and even had a cemetery before the decision was made to move the whole town. What brought these rugged pioneers here and what brought them to the “crossroads” decision to move the town? Call the museum at 970-522-3895 to reserve your spot at History Café.
