PHLT Helps Expand Camelback Mountain/Big Pocono State Park

On February 24th, PHLT transferred 40 acres in Pocono Township to the Bureau of State Parks to increase the size of Big Pocono State Park. This new addition will provide greater area for wildlife habitat and public recreation, and will prevent further development in a rapidly-growing area. We are extremely grateful to the Fritz-VanDriesen family, whose roots go back to the earliest days of Tannersville, for accepting far less than the appraised value for their family land because their desire was to see it preserved.

Ensure the land you love is protected, legally, forever. Click here to explore options.

Save the Date: City Nature Challenge coming in April

City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a worldwide event that gets people outdoors and learning about the plants and animals that live in their communities. PHLT Stewardship Manager Matt Schultz will organize the Northeast Pennsylvania region in this global bioblitz--and everyone is encouraged to join in on the fun!

PHLT will host an introductory workshop at the Brodhead Creek Heritage Center on Saturday, April 15th at 1PM to help users get familiar with iNaturalist, the nature observation app that participants will use in the City Nature Challenge.

Observations made between April 28th - May 1st and posted and identified on the iNaturalist platform by May 7th will count for the final standings in the City Nature Challenge.

Notice of Application for Accreditation

The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet

national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Pocono Heritage Land Trust is pleased to announce it is applying for accreditation. A public comment period is now open.

The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs.

Accreditation is important for PHLT because it ensures we have policies and procedures in place to continue protecting the special places of the Poconos. As part of accreditation, the land trust must demonstrate ongoing fiscal accountability, strong organizational leadership, sound land protection procedures and lasting stewardship of the land PHLT conserves.

The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending

applications. Comments must relate to how Pocono Heritage Land Trust complies with national quality standards. These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust. For the full list of standards see http://www.landtrustaccreditation.org/help-and-resources/indicator-practices.

To learn more about the accreditation program and to submit a comment, visit

www.landtrustaccreditation.org, or email your comment to info@landtrustaccreditation.org.

Comments may also be mailed to the Land Trust Accreditation Commission,

Attn: Public Comments, 36 Phila Street, Suite 2, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Comments on Pocono Heritage Land Trust’s application will be most useful by July 15th.
