August 2018
Photo of the Month

The Hansen family was excited to ride in our town festival parade this year with the theme of "Rev up for Hudson Days." We planned to "rev up the kids with ice cream" at the city park! Turns out a painted yoga ball makes a pretty good ice cream cone.   Photo credit: Lynn Petersen

Cash Cow

We had no winners in our July CA$H COW contest :( When you've finished your gallon of milk, be on the lookout for those winning jugs!

We will label 8 jugs with the big cash prize of $100 in August. Best chances to find them are right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

The Real Deal:
$1.00 off any 16 oz bacon
or 75¢ off any 12 oz bacon

Put brain food in those lunch boxes
It's almost back-to-school time! Check out Hansen's Dairy stores for healthy, local options for sack lunches and after-school snacks. We have string cheese sticks, cheese curds, yogurt,
cottage cheese, hummus (now in snack packs!), granola bars, honey, dried beef, beef strips and sticks, and much more!

Cheers to full-fat dairy products
Another recent study has revealed that consuming full-fat dairy products is not bad for your health, as previously thought.

"Our research adds to an increasing body of evidence showing no harm (or benefit) to heart disease or overall mortality associated with consumption of whole-fat dairy foods," says lead researcher Marcia Otto, Ph.D., nutritional and cardiovascular epidemiologist at UTHealth Houston's School of Public Health. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Still not convinced? We like what Heather Mayer Irvine has to say i n her  article  in Runner's World:

"So going full-fat dairy is not only not bad for your health, it comes with a whole host of other benefits ... It makes you feel full so you're not snacking on empty calories later in the day, and the fat allows for certain nutrient absorption, like vitamins A, D, E, and K. Dairy is also an excellent source of protein, to help your muscles recover, and calcium, phosphorous, and vitamin D to help strengthen your bones," Irvine says.

Here are two other articles on the topic:
Customer of the Month
Ron and Jan Heth
The August Customer of the Month is Ron Heth of Cedar Falls. His first  introduction to Hansen's products came shortly after our Cedar Falls store opened.

"We have been fans of your ground beef, the patties, the sweet butter, and the milk, of course. We love your products because of their value, quality, and we also like helping out local businesses where we can," Ron said. "The extra benefit is the chance to pick on employee Sheila Wetherell (or vice versa) when she is there!"

If you know Jan and Ron, be sure to wish them a happy birthday this month as they celebrate on the 30th and 31st, respectively. You just might see them celebrating with some ice cream treats at the Hansen's Dairy store in Waterloo, as they like to visit there with family and friends.

"Supporting the Hansen's operation just seems like the right thing to do, and we tell many people about your products," Ron said.

Thanks, Ron! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month

The August Cow of the Month sure loves to "pucker up"!

Apple Pucker is 4 years old and is pregnant with her third calf due Dec. 28. She has produced 65,000 pounds of milk with 2,500 pounds of butterfat in her lifetime.

Apple Pucker is a pretty cow, and the Holstein Association thinks so too. She's ranked No. 19 in the entire Holstein breed for Type, which is a cow's body structure. But the best thing about her is she loves to give kisses, as demonstrated by herd manager Blake Hansen.
Recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
From Julie Grunklee, goodfoodconnections.com

"Here's a refreshing salad inspired by my daughter, Amanda, who works at Hansen's Dairy Cedar Falls.

"Bacon is so versatile and flavorful. I like baking it to avoid splatters all over my stovetop (and me!)  Just be sure to let it cool before you cut or crumble it. Hansen's has vegetables available seasonally, and I was able to purchase everything for this recipe in the Cedar Falls store. I hope you enjoy this summertime salad!"

Cheesy BLT Salad
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook/Bake time:  40  minutes
Total: 50 minutes
Serves:  4-8
Starred ingredients can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy Stores. Fresh produce is seasonally available.

Ingredients
  • lb Bell's Mills or Beeler's Sliced Bacon*
  • 1 medium onion, diced*
  • 1-2 Tbsp oil or bacon drippings
  • 1 pkg Rolling Hills Spring Mix, cut into bite sized chunks*
  • 1 large tomato, cut into 1-inch chunks*
  • 2 medium cucumbers, cut into 1-inch chunks*
  • Bongard's Premium shredded cheese (1/4 cup for each serving)*
Directions
Lay out bacon strips in 9 x 13 glass baking dish.  Bake in oven at 400 F for 20 minutes, turn over and return to oven for another 15-20 minutes. Bacon could also be cooked on the stovetop, but cooking in the oven helps contain splatters and odors to the oven.

While bacon is cooking, chop up vegetables and spring mix lettuce.  Place lettuce into large bowl and top with tomato and cucumber.

Heat oil or bacon drippings in skillet and cook onion 4-5 minutes or until soft. Remove from heat.

When bacon is done, remove strips from pan and let cool. Cut up or crumble.

Top salad with onions and bacon.  Mix well and put in individual bowls, then top each bowl  with ¼ cup of  Bongard's   Premium  S hredded  C heese.  Enjoy!
