THE DOUBLE STEPS

(Los Pasos Dobles)

Directed by ISAKI LAQUESTA/Spain/2012/86mins.

The best way to escape from your pursuers without leaving any traces behind you is to walk backwards over your own footprints. This is what French artist and author Franois Augiras believed as he painted every inch of the walls of a military bunker in the desert and let it sink into the sand so that no-one would find it till the 21st Century. But who is Augiras? One of the most interesting auteurs working in Spain today, Catalan filmmaker Isaki Lacuesta, and one of Spain's foremost living artists, Miquel Barcel, guide us through the Mali desert in search of a fresco painted by Augiras in this gorgeous film that won the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. (French & Bombara with English subtitles).

WILAYA

Directed by PEDRO PEREZ ROSADA/Spain/2012/97mins.

Fatimetu is born to a Sahrawi family in a Saharan refugee camp in Algeria and later sent to live with foster parents in Spain. After the death of her mother she returns to the camp. She has been absent for sixteen years. Her brother now expects her to stay and look after her sister Hayat, who has difficulty walking. Fatimetu, who unlike the other women can drive a car, finds work transporting animals, meat and bread from one administrative district to another. In time, the Sahrawi people become accustomed to the woman who tears about the desert without a hijab in her beaten up jeep. But Fatimetu is torn between life in the desert and her memories of her family and friends in Spain. With unprecedented access to the Sahrawi community, Pedro Prez Rosado, provides a voice this unrepresented group of refugees and their struggle for independence. The outstanding performance of newcomer Nadhira Mohamed, who was herself born in a refugee camp in Tinduf, landed her the Best Actress award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.

ICEBERG

Directed by GABRIEL VELAZQUEZ/Spain/2012/94mins.

The most significant part of an iceberg is unseen. Icebergs do not appear in adults. Icebergs are the world of adolescence, of which only a tip appears, a small part of the vast universe that lies behind them. For the first time, these kids face their first big problem by themselves: their iceberg. Three interwoven stories of "teenage silence" in a winter river as it flows by a small city. With notable cinematography and a magnificent cast of non-actors wonderfully directed by Gabriel Velzquez, Iceberg has been a staple in a festival circuit that included the Rotterdam Film Festival.

(In Spanish with English subtitles).

CONNECTED

Documentary by TIFFANY SHLAIN/USA/2011/82mins.

With wonderful heart and an impressive sense of scale, Tiffany Shlain's vibrant and insightful documentary, Connected, explores the visible and invisible connections linking major issues of our time-the environment, consumption, population growth, technology, human rights, the global economy-while searching for her place in the world during a transformative time in her life. Employing a splendidly imaginative combination of animation and archival footage, plus several surprises, Shlain constructs a chronological tour of Western modernization through the work of her late father, Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and best-selling author of Art and Physics and The Alphabet Versus the Goddess. With humor and irony, the Shlain family life merges with philosophy to create both a personal portrait and a proposal for ways we can move forward as a civilization. Connected illuminates the beauty and tragedy of human endeavor while boldly championing the importance of personal connectedness for understanding and coping with today's global conditions.

WINNER: Women in Film Award, National Geographic
