CHURCH RESTORATION & RENEWAL
|
|
All our Masses are now Livestreaming from O'Donnell Hall
|
|
Our beautiful church was built by the sacrifice of our parishioners in 1956. It has been lovingly maintained by countless Altar Society members, Liturgical Environment ministers, parishioners and staff over the decades. But, like any 65 year old home, especially one that hosts thousands of guests each week, the church’s infrastructure -- its structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and technological skin and bones -- is aging. We have tried diligently to keep up with the repairs and necessary improvements around the church, but we have much more to do.
Our Called to Renew Campaign is meant to help cover the costs of the renewal of the church. When the Campaign was suspended because of the current Covid-19 crisis, we had received pledges of over $4 million from some of our most wonderfully generous parishioners—about half of our $8 million goal.
With the required closure of the church and this seed money, we decided to go ahead with the work earlier than we had planned. The pews, chandeliers, roof, floors, doors, walls, carpets, restrooms, A/V systems and the exterior stairs and hardscape will all be restored and renewed.
By starting this work now, we hope to be ready to welcome all of you back to our beautiful church as soon as possible.
Thank you for all of your generosity and support through these challenging times. Stay healthy as we continue to support one another, in faith and ministry.
Happy Easter and God bless,
Bob Hodges
Business Manager

Safer at Home for many of us has given us time to clean, sort and organize.
Our prayers continue for those directly affected and on the front lines of COVID-19 and we also want to look ahead to brighter times.
We hope that will include the
50th American Martyrs Parish Fair
as scheduled.
We'd love to celebrate our Fair's storied history at the 50th American Martyrs Parish Fair this October. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who have attended many, many fairs over the past 49 years.
We want to hear from you!
Please send your photos, stories, and description of memorabilia you may have from Fairs past to
Fair50@AmericanMartyrs.org
.
Please include dates whenever possible.
Thanks and see you at Fair 50!

STEWARDSHIP -
Moving Us Closer to God
|
|
In the environmental awareness movement, sometime in the late 1970s, Joni Mitchell had a popular song titled
Big Yellow Taxi
. As open spaces were being taken over by urban sprawl, it was a protest song about what was happening to our outdoor areas. The refrain of the song was “You don’t know what you have ‘till it’s gone.”
Talking with friends, either virtually or at a safe distance, the conversations usually come around to “things missed.” It may be a simple thing like walks on the strand or the beach, more upsetting things like missing dining out for a milestone birthday or wedding anniversary, or a down right tragic event like a cancelled wedding. Then there is the restriction that we cannot attend Mass in person.
Consequently, the refrain of the Joni Mitchell song has been ringing in my ears, “You don’t know what you have ‘till it’s gone.” I’m sure we will get over this, but I sense that the real danger is that we might forget the lesson of being deprived of what we consider our basic freedoms.
For me this was put very nicely in a post on one of the neighborhood forums; “So, the truth is, I don’t want things to return to the way they once were. present hope we take the lessons and challenges of the past few weeks and create a new normal. My goal is to be more thankful, love harder, and truly appreciate all the blessings each day that were so easily overlooked just a few weeks ago.”
We have an opportunity to change things for the better as we emerge from this unfortunate event. The challenge is to remember how we are feeling now and to keep the feeling of appreciation for our gifts and concern for our neighbors as we go forward. Adopting the principles of a stewardship way of life would be a great place to start.

STEPHEN MINISTRY - Confidential Care and Support
|
|
Stephen Ministry is there when the road of life is bumpy
Stephen Ministry is for anyone who needs support during a difficult time in life. We all have bumps in the road of life, times when we are lonely, confused, hurt, frightened, grieving or questioning our faith. These needs include facing life transitions, confronting a serious illness, being hospitalized, dealing with the grief of losing someone close to us, facing a financial crisis, or experiencing loneliness or aging.
On the road to Emmaus, the disciples discovered Jesus in the breaking of the bread. In difficult times, you may discover Jesus in the loving support and companionship of a Stephen Minister.
For more information, please call our confidential phone line, 310-545-8244.
