Summertime 🌞 and the “ livin's easy”. But is it?
For those of us with intellectually challenged kids, young and old, summer days can be complicated.
Individuals on the autism spectrum benefit from structure and routine, which reduce fear of the unknown. Predictability helps avoid unnecessary confusion. Maintaining consistent routines throughout the day help prevent challenging behaviors. Effective communication helps to avoid frustration that can often lead to heightened anxiety.
Those with limited verbal communication count on us to create stress free environments. Words are not the only way we communicate. Watch for other forms of communication. Body language gives us lots of clues. Be aware! Sensitivity to all forms of communication will help make days run smoothly.
Choosing summer activities away from home requires lots of preparation. Support staff need to prepare themselves as well as the activity destination. Acceptance is the ultimate goal. Everyone needs to understand how the activity can run smoothly and what special adjustments will make a positive impact on the individual. Avoiding triggers will leave everyone with a positive experience that can be built upon. Introducing new experiences and new friends gives everyone an understanding of the need to accommodate all individuals no matter their ability. We all fear the unknown. Each new exposure helps alleviate this fear.
By working together to help others understand, we move closer to communities that include everyone. We all have UNIQUE ABILITIES. Let’s learn, share and celebrate together!
Happy, sun filled summer days🌞!
