Q: Can I do community service during Spring Break?

A: Yes! Spring Break (March 4 - 8) is a great time complete community service hours. But don't wait until March to make your spring break plans - now is the time to find/contact organizations and schedule hours. The earlier you have all your service hours planned and scheduled, the better! Use the Service Approval Criteria List to make sure your service will be approved.

Q: If I do more than 12 hours of service this semester, will the extra hours roll over to Fall 2024?

A: No. Everyone's hours will reset to zero on May 4.

Q: When can I start completing hours for Fall 2024?

A: May 4. Please submit any hours you complete over the summer within two weeks of the day you complete them. For more information about the two-week timeframe, click here. Because extra hours will rollover from the Fall to Spring semester, you could complete 24 hours of community service over the summer and not have to worry about it during the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters!

How to Check the Status of Your Community Service Submissions:

1. Sign in to the Get Involved at SIUE website (https://getinvolved.siue.edu/).

2. Click on your photo or the gray circle with your initials at the top right of the page.

3. Select “Experiences” (NOT “Service Hours”) from the drop-down menu.

4. Each submission will show its status (approved, pending, or denied):

Have 8 hours (total) of community service completed and submitted.

GOAL #3:

DUE MAR. 31

Have 12 hours (total) of community service completed and submitted. Having all your hours submitted early allows for time to address any submissions that are denied (not approved) before the April 15 deadline.

REMINDER: Completing and reporting/submitting

at least 12 hours of approved community service between November 28, 2023 - April 15, 2024 is one of the requirements to receive Johnetta Haley Scholarship funds for the Fall 2024 semester.

NOTE: While you are not limited to pre-approved organizations/experiences, completing community service with organizations that are not pre-approved may result in your service hours being denied (not approved), regardless of approval in past semesters. To be approved, your service must meet the current JHS definition of community service as described in the JHS Student Guide. You may use the Service Approval Criteria List to help determine if an organization/activity will be approved. Additionally, students may contact Erin Myers in the SOAR Office (text 618-706-9673, email jhscholar@siue.edu, call 618-650-5650 or 618-650-3790) to verify if an organization/activity will be approved or for help finding qualifying community service opportunities.
