BEFORE YOU START: Read the New Edition of the JHS Student Guide

We have made some major changes that go into effect today (August 22). To understand the changes, read the JHS Student Guide: Fall 2024 - Spring 2025, Edition 2 (08-22-24). For your convenience, differences between Edition 1 and Edition 2 are highlighted in yellow like this.


STEP 1: Find & Schedule Qualified Community Service Experiences

Read the complete updated instructions in the "Road Map - STEP 1" section of the new edition of the JHS Student Guide.

  1. Read the JHS Newsletter email each Wednesday for information about pre-qualified service experiences for which you can sign up (see the "Pre-Qualified Service Experiences" section above). However, do not rely on our newsletter as the only place you look for community service experiences!
  2. Contact pre-qualified organizations to schedule community service hours that fit in to your schedule. The JHS Community Service Experiences Catalog: Fall 2024 - Spring 2025, Edition 2 (08-22-24) contains updated listings of pre-qualified and excluded organizations/experiences.
  3. You are not limited to pre-qualified experiences and organizations. However, completing community service activities with organizations that are not pre-qualified may result in your service hours being denied (not receiving final approval), regardless of approval in past semesters.
The first goal is to have your first 4 hours completed and submitted by September 15, 2024.

GOAL #1:

DUE SEPT. 15

Have your first 4 hours of approved community service completed and submitted.


GOAL #2:

DUE OCT. 27

Have 8 hours (total) of approved community service completed and submitted.

STEP 2: Participate & Keep Records

Read the updated instructions in the "Road Map - STEP 2" section of the new edition of the JHS Student Guide.

STEP 3: Report Your Hours

  1. Earlier this week you should have received an invitation to join the Johnetta Haley Scholars organization on the Get Involved at SIUE website. The invitation email was sent your SIUE email account. If you haven't already, please follow the directions in the email to join the organization TODAY. You will need to be part of the JHS organization on Get Involved to submit community service hours effective today. If you did not receive an invitation, please email Erin Myers at jhscholar@siue.edu.
  2. Read the updated reporting instructions in the "Road Map - STEP 3" section of the new edition of the JHS Student Guide. Hours submitted prior to today do not need to be resubmitted. For help with issues related to the Get Involved at SIUE website, please contact Ashley Jones in the Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub (email ajonebf@siue.edu or call 618-650-3179).

STEP 4: Receive Final Approval

Read the updated instructions in the "Road Map - STEP 4" section of the new edition of the JHS Student Guide.


Hours submitted prior to today do not need to be resubmitted. We will be reviewing prior submissions over the next two weeks.
