Children's Church Returns!

Exciting News! Thanks to the passion and dedication of a team of our parishioners, we will be offering some faith formation for children this coming school year. We would love your help to spread the word about this opportunity for children and families. If you know of any families with young children who may enjoy participating in a once-a-month Children's Church offering please let one of the Co-Chairs, (Barbara Hersey, Stella Bearse, or Robin Greene) know so they can share information and invite families. All are welcome!

Our first Children's Church will be on:

Sunday on October 6, 2024

Although, there may not be a lot of children in church lately the team is moving forth with the optimism of "If we build it they will come."

The Children will be invited to Children's Church from the rear of the Church, from roughly from the Reading of the Gospel to the Exchange of Peace.

The team plans to work off of a Godly Play framework to explore Scripture. Godly Play is a Christian curriculum that uses a Montessori approach to teach Bible stories, parables, and liturgical lessons to children and adults. It's a creative way to help people explore the mystery of God's presence in their lives, and to develop their faith and spirituality. Godly Play values openness, community, discovery, and process. It encourages participants to make personal connections between faith stories and their own experiences through wondering questions, silence, and open-ended responses. The curriculum also uses Christian language to help people understand God and make meaning in their lives. Godly Play can help children prepare for worship by developing language and communication skills, thinking skills, and empathy. It can also help people learn to hear what God is saying and respond creatively

All are warmly welcomed to join these discussions and efforts. If you are interested in participating in the Children's Church Team, please attend the next meeting set for Sunday, September 22 at 11:15 AM in the Library. Any questions? Please reach out to Barbara Hersey.

Life Lately

The Photos Speak for Themselves

So much for the quiet dog days of Summer! It has been anything but quiet around Saint Mary's. This last week was jam packed with important events in the Life of St. Mary's.

Thank you to all who stayed after the 10:00 AM service last week to help cheer on the bikers from ROAR. We appreciate all your support showing our greater community how St. Mary's LOVES.

Father Michael was officially welcomed by the Bishop and our collective church community as the Eighth Rector of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church on an absolutely beautiful night. It was a moving ceremony marked by hope, love and welcome. Thank you to everyone who participated to make it such a tremendous service for us all.

We marked our 16th Annual Day of Remembrance Service for those lost on September 11, 2001. St. Marys, once again partnered with the Barnstable Fire Department and Barnstable Police to mark this solemn anniversary. Saint Mary's rolled out the red carpet to those in our community looking to mourn, remember, and reflect. Thank you to everyone who helped create a beautiful service and reception in our gardens.

Movie Theology Matinee on Sunday, September 15

For our season opener, we will be screening “The Lady Killers.” This British film premiered in 1955, and stars among others, Peter Sellers and Sir Alec Guiness.

The plot centers around an elderly widow with a very vivid imagination, Mrs. Wilberforce, who lives with her raucous parrots in a falling down house over the entrance to a railway tunnel in Kings Cross, London. One day she is approached by a man (Guiness) who claims he needs a few rooms to let for rehearsal space for the amateur string quartet he formed and would she be so kind. She acquiesces, unaware of the fact that he and his cronies plan on carrying out a robbery of a security van in her very own neighborhood.

The plot thickens with the robbers using a clueless Mrs. W. as a pawn to keep the disguised money. The ruse ends when one of the musicians drops his cello case and out flies hundreds of bank notes, which Mrs. W. witnesses. I’ll let you find out what happens afterwards.

Get Involved With Volunteer Opportunities

INREACH

Volunteer opportunities within the Saint Mary’s Community:

Lemonade on The Lawn

We are always looking for more volunteers to take a turn hosting our fellowship hours. There is a paper sign-up sheet in the sunroom on the bulletin board. Hosting the fellowship hour after our worship services is a great gift to our community. As host or hostess you and a companion provide store-bought or home-made finger food goodies for all to enjoy after the 10:00 AM service. There is also a Fellowship Hour scheduled after the 8:00 AM service on the first Sunday of each month.

It's all with the help of our wonderful Sexton Lanny, who assists with set-up and clean-up.

There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the sunroom. Click here for more information.

Please note! As weather permits, we will continue gathering outside through the end of September. We plan to switch back to coffee inside starting in October.

Looking for Volunteers to help run our first Annual Trunk or Treat

We are looking for a team to coordinate this fun event. Even if you aren't interested in being part of the leadership for this event, there are many ways you can still help. We will be looking for candy donations, (be on the lookout for donation bins starting in early October) trunk decorators, greeters, promoters, and definitely for folks who are willing to dress up in costumes. Show us your creativity and Halloween Spirit St. Marys! Please reach out to Allison to offer your help.

Not familiar with Trunk or Treats?

Click here to read an article about the fun community offering. Unfortunately, the Barnstable Village Association Halloween Parade/Dance for Candy was canceled due to a lack of volunteers so, we are particularly pleased to be filling this void for the children of Barnstable Village. Thank you in advance for your help!

Angels’ Treasures Thrift Shop

Angels' Treasures Thrift Shop has switched gears to embrace the Fall season and they have been busy sprucing up the displays. Please remember as Season's change, it is a great time to see what you might be able to donate to our fabulous little shop!

We are always looking for more helpers in the shop. Angels’ Treasurers is seeking volunteers for shop coverage, help with our social media presence and clutter patrol/sorting. Please contact Janis Umschlag, Shop Manager at angelstreasures@stmarys-church.org.

OUTREACH

Volunteer opportunities serving the community outside of St. Mary’s Church:

Faith Family Kitchen

This program provides nutritious meals to anyone who is hungry at the Faith Assembly of God at 154 Bearses Way in Hyannis. Our volunteers are expected to arrive on the fourth Monday of every month at 4:30 PM to help set up for take-out meals and dine-in dinners. Serving and clean-up generally take until 7:30 PM. Please contact Carolyn Thomas or Beth Hearn if you wish to volunteer with this program.

Miracle Kitchen

Once a month on Wednesday, Saint Mary's has the privilege of creating healthy food and fabulous desserts to serve for lunch for 30 to 50 people at the Salvation Army on North Street in Hyannis. This Ministry needs cooks, bakers, delivery people, and servers.  Please contact Sally Cameron if you would like be part of this team.

Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod

Saint Mary's Parishioners have a long tradition of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod (HFH-CC). HFH-CC partners with families in need of an affordable home to help them build one of their own; fostering stability, self-reliance and a strong sense of community. The elevated cost of housing and living on Cape Cod makes this a very needed ministry in our area. There are many different ways to volunteer with Habitat, and they do not all involve swinging a hammer. Some of our parishioners, make quilts, some provide snack and home baked treats for the workers, some help with administrative tasks in the office, some help with site landscaping. Click here to learn more about volunteering with Habitat.

Amazing Grace of Cape Cod

Did you know that Amazing Grace Camp offers programming for children and families affected by incarceration year-round? Many St. Mary's parishioners were involved with Amazing Grace during its formation and many are still actively involved. It takes a community to create and offer a camp experience and a year-round program. Whether you have an hour, a day, or a week, there are many ways you can share your gifts and passions. We need volunteers to work with children at the week of camp and at our monthly activities, and we also need volunteers to help us create programming, promote our work, and oversee administrative tasks.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Camp Mentor: Interact with our amazing kids during morning, afternoon, or overnight shifts the week of camp.
  • Camp Specialist: Offer 1-3 hours during the week of camp, sharing a skill or talent.
  • Activity Volunteer: Interact with our amazing kids at school-year activities and events.
  • Program Developer: Help us find and create fun things for our Amazing Grace kids to do at camp and/or at monthly gatherings.
  • Amazing Grace Story-Teller: Help us spread the word about Amazing Grace and its work.
  • Recruiter: Help us find kids to join our program, and help us find volunteers to support our work.
  • Fundraiser: Help us find financial support to do our work.
  • Implementer: Help us with behind-the-scenes support.
