Bonnie's Letter
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16, NRSV)
Dear Friends,
I had the occasion this past weekend to visit Alabama. I was invited by my friend, the Rev. Jonathan Pemberton who is the pastor of Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church in Tuskegee, Alabama. Jonathan is also a fellow student at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School where I received my Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees and where I am completing an Executive Certificate in Gender, Sexual and Racial Justice. I was so pleased to be invited to be with him, his family, and his congregation. The hospitality I encountered was phenomenal and heartwarming.
As a part of my weekend, I was able to visit the historic Moton Airfield, where the Tuskegee Airmen trained to participate in World War II. This was the only training field for the African American pilot candidates in the US Army Air Corps. To see the place where heroes of our history trained to serve our nation, despite the segregation and discrimination they encountered, touched my heart deeply.
I also had a chance to see the historic Tuskegee University begun by Booker T. Washington on Independence Day in 1881. The University has been designated as the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site by the National Park Service. Booker T. Washington and Washington Carver are both buried in the cemetery next to the chapel. The more than 3000-acre University is a private, historically Black land-grant University. Its programs include nursing, veterinary medicine, psychology, mechanical engineering, biology and the biologic sciences, business administration and management, and agriculture and animal sciences. To walk the grounds of this historic school and to know the efforts made to educate our Black citizens from 1881, touched my heart deeply. I stood and had my picture taken at the famous Booker T. Washington memorial which proclaims his goal to “lift the veil of ignorance” from the formerly enslaved people.

I share these experiences as a reminder of how different many of our histories have been – often depending on race, ethnicity, economic status, and our gender identity and sexual orientation. We are a nation, and a church, which needs to understand the roots of our nation, the difficulties of our citizens, and be clear that we will honor the lives and the stories of those who are different from ourselves.
On Sunday morning, I stepped into the pulpit of Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church as the first white woman to preach there since its inception as a Sunday School in 1903. I was humbled and honored to have been asked to preach. I shared my message from the gospel of John 3:14-21, which includes one of the most famous verses in scripture quoted above this letter. The message is clear, in these weighty days of conflict, division, hate, and war across our world, it is even more necessary for us to unite with our faith in God, our following of Jesus, and our strengthening from the Holy Spirit.
We must not let our difference keep us from experiencing the grace of God, the blessing and hope of belief, and the nurturing of faith communities. In these days, we must lay down our burdens – not to forget the sins we have committed and the challenges we have faced, but to prepare to move into the light of God’s love and the resurrection joy of Easter.
My hope for you this day is that you can look, critically and with compassion, at the past errors of the world, the nation, the church, and even individual mistakes and move into the light of love God provides. Let’s open our hearts to forgiveness as we travel through the last few weeks of Lent with hope for a brighter future in which we have a role in creating.
Blessings, Bonnie

2024 Summer Conference Meeting
For the first time, all four Pennsylvania conferences of the UCC will be gathering for a shared Meeting on June 7-9, 2024 at The Penn Stater in State College, PA. We will have shared worship, workshops, meals and meetings as well as each conference's separate business meeting.
Below is a letter from the four PA UCC Conference Ministers
about this year’s Summer Meeting:
The planning committee for the Keystone State UCC Conference Summer Meeting has been working diligently to prepare for our June 7-9 meeting. The Keystone Working Group in collaboration with the Conference Ministers have been seeking grants and additional funding to assist with the costs of the meeting.
We want you to know that YOUR attendance is vitally important to us. We need you to help us plan for the future of our conferences. Our General Minister and President, the Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson will be with us on Saturday and Sunday, and we hope you will be with us to meet her and worship with her on Sunday.
The costs for this meeting will be significantly higher than our usual conference meetings. For one thing, this is a 3-day meeting and incorporates the extensive use of technology and the Penn Stater multiple room assignments for our gathering. We do not want the cost of the event to prevent anyone from attending.
Therefore, we are increasing our scholarship funds to cover ½ the cost of the registration. The registration materials (which are forthcoming) include some links for additional hotel locations, should you choose to utilize them.
Also, we want you to know that our meetings as a Keystone Conference will likely be shorter and less costly.
Please make plans to join us in State College in June and celebrate the work we are doing together, because we believe “Together We Are Stronger.”
Registration is open. You will receive a separate email regarding registration. In the meantime, please watch this video (click on the link below) featuring all four conference ministers with more information on this event.

Celebrating Our Churches
(shared by the PNEC Local Congregational Support Working Group)
Flicksville UCC (Bangor, PA)
Rev. Ken Hess, pastor
Filcksville United Church of Christ feeds a family every month in Bangor or Pen Argyl. The church has a food pantry, and every month it supplies fresh produce, in addition to pantry items, to a family recommended by an agency in each town. The agencies work with the school district, and the families are not always the same. At major holidays--Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter-- the church feeds two families. From the Conference, thanks, Flicksville, for the work you’re doing and the care you take for others.

How to Church Videos
Over the past several months, the Local Congregational Support Working Group and the Congregational Vitality Team have been working to produce a series of short videos addressing some of the frequently asked questions of our local churches. We’ve been calling them, “How to Church: I Wish I Knew…”. Our object has been to provide our churches with an engaging and insightful means of both educating and inspiring their leaders and larger congregation. Thus far, we have produced videos on being a good Consistory member, the wider church, and community engagement—with many more topics on the way! All of the videos are available on the PNEC YouTube channel at the links below. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, please do! If you have a question that your church is wrestling with that you think would be a helpful subject for a video, please let us know, because these are meant to help you—our churches!

Re-affirmation of Ordination Vows
March 28th - 10:00 AM
The Conference Ministers of the four Pennsylvania UCC Conferences will host a Service of the Reaffirmation of Ordination Vows for ordained clergy on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 10:00a via ZOOM.
It’s a long-standing custom in liturgical traditions for clergy to gather on the same day Jesus offered “a new commandment”– to love and serve one another– for the reaffirmation of their ordination. We hope this will be an experience of spiritual encouragement and connection.
Clergy are encouraged to wear a stole received at their ordination, a red stole, or any other stole that has significant meaning. The service includes the sacrament of virtual communion so please prepare in advance.

The March Event for Crossroads and Connections
Join Us for a Webinar - Book Banning! What Comes Next?
You are invited to a webinar on the topic of book banning.
Date: Monday, March 18, 2024
Time: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time
Dave Bushnell and Tom Davis- Shappell will facilitate a discussion with our experts - Nikki Rivera, Molly Magro, Parker Webb and Dr. Robert (Bob) Hollister.
Participants should come prepared for a thoughtful discussion about the impact of book banning in our society.
Book Banning has been around for almost as long as books have been published. The presenters for this Webinar are very familiar with the pressures of book banning efforts especially in public schools. Why is this happening and what are ways for school librarians, superintendents, and school boards to respond to the challenges? Our webinar will focus especially on LGBTQ+ literature bans because LGBTQ+ youth are often marginalized and need ‘safe places’ of support and affirmation. After presentations and interactions of the presenters, they will respond to questions from those attending the Webinar.
Who Should Attend? Parents of school aged children; school superintendents; school librarians; school board members; LGBTQ+ community; anyone interested in this topic.
Here is the registration link to the March webinar for Crossroads &Connections: Building Relationships and Community- on book banning. Registration is open.

Boundary Training
Not-Your-Average Boundaries Training is tailored to focus on strategies to foster clergy emotional resiliency and well-being.
While we still cover the "requirements" we believe the best prevention involves encouraging leaders to take steps to manage their stress in order to maintain balance and perspective when temptation to violate boundaries arises.
This live online boundaries training is 5 total hours split over 2 consecutive days (2.5 hours each day). Following the first session, participants are asked to engage in a bit of reflection work in preparation for the second session. This online boundaries training will be conducted via secure Zoom video conferencing
Classes will be offered May 7/8 from 1PM-4PM & October 15/16 from 10AM-1PM 2023
Limit is 40 people per class
Zoom link and workbook will be emailed to all participants 1 week prior to the scheduled training.

Women's History in the UCC
Women's History Month, celebrated annually in March, honors the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. It originated from International Women's Day which was first observed in the early 1900s and gained traction during the women's rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s.This month serves to raise awareness of women's roles in shaping societies, inspire future generations, and highlight ongoing challenges.
In the Penn Central eNews each week this month they will be highlighting the contributions of women in the history of the UCC. Join us in celebrating the extraordinary work of these women this month and every month.
The Forest Minstrel” - Popular magazines and newspapers flourished in the early 1800s, giving clergy and lay members new ways to share faith stories, engage in theological debate, and lift up beauty through poetry. Many women became active and successful authors.
Born in Connecticut, Lydia Jane Wheeler (1802-1862) sang and wrote verse by the age of 12, demonstrating early literary skills that eventually became her livelihood. After her marriage to Oliver Pierson at 18, she moved to rural Liberty Township in the Allegany Mountains of Pennsylvania. She was known as the “Forest Minstrel.”
Pierson’s writings appeared in a wide variety of publications. She wrote for the English-language Weekly Messenger of the German Reformed Church, and her short sermonic pieces reminded readers of the call to discipleship in everyday life. She often asked, “And how did Jesus love his disciples? Did he love them for their docility, their gratitude, and affectionate attention? Oh no! He loved them while they were unbelieving, captious, easily offended, and ready to forsake him in the hour of trial.”
“Lydia Jane’s” poetry focused on the moral dynamics of families. She called out fathers and husbands, speaking plainly about how one could not abuse family members and then kneel to pray. Keeping the Sabbath, attending to the Word, practicing fervent prayer and worship were paramount.
The voice of this creative laywoman still rings strongly almost two hundred years later in her poem, “Hymn to Jesus.”
Wake and sing, my raptured soul!
Wake and sing in sacred lays;
Let the sounding numbers roll
To thy Great Redeemer’s praise.
Sing to Jesus—spotless, bright,
Source of every pure delight.
Now he sways infinity!
Yet his grace is still the same;
Still he hears the sinner’s cry,
Still he loves the humble frame,
Still he bids the weary breast
Welcome to his blissful rest.

The Institute for Youth Ministry’s Princeton Forum on Youth Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary
This year’s theme is “Craft: The Future of Youth Ministry,” and the event dates are April 30 - May 3, 2024, on the seminary campus. We believe the Forum is a unique opportunity for youth ministry leaders who crave a community of peers seeking to be transformed through theological reflection that meets practical application in ministry with young people.
Youth ministers are often the ones called upon in the church to cast a vision for how we can build life together with young people in our congregations and communities. Will you please share about this event with those who are doing youth ministry in your congregation? We have also attached a flyer that you can share on social media and in newsletters with the ministry leaders who would find value in our resources. More information can also be found on our Facebook and Instagram platforms.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you for your help in spreading the word!
