An Evening with Christina Baker Kline
The New Castle County Reads selection for 2018 is The Orphan Train , by Christina Baker Kline. Set in present-day Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, The Orphan Train highlights the real-life story of the trains that carried thousands of abandoned children from the East Coast to the Midwest for 75 years around the turn of the 20th century. It’s the story of two women who build an unexpected friendship: a 91-year-old woman with a hidden past as an orphan-train rider and a troubled teen with one last chance at redemption. As they get to know each other, they find unlikely common ground and together are able to undo the emotional knots of their troubled pasts. Read the book , and then meet the author at the author talk event. FREE

Take the Great Schools, Clean Streams pledge from now until April 27
Sign the “Great Schools, Clean Streams” pledge at greatschoolscleanstreams.org today
Great Schools, Clean Streams is New Castle County's annual environmental awareness campaign. Sponsored by the Department of Special Services, our goal is to help residents do their part to keep our waterways clean and safe, prevent plumbing problems at home, and support their local school system.
Great Schools, Clean Streams is a pledge drive. No, we're not looking for donations! We partner with schools in the county to encourage residents to pledge to dispose of their used cooking fats, oils, and grease properly. Those who make this pledge can assign it to any public, charter, parochial or private school located in New Castle County, DE. The schools that collect the most pledges in their enrollment tier win cash prizes.
Through instruction and practice, learn the benefits of meditation and mindfulness, and how to incorporate the practice into your daily routine. Each week you explore a different theme of mindfulness through a combination of instruction, practice, group feedback/discussion, and evaluation.

Some sessions may include short videos demonstrating key ideas of mindfulness and meditation practices.
