Fourth graders had a hands-on, interactive opportunity to learn about the Lenape Native American tribe, who settled in what is now New Jersey. As an introduction to our upcoming unit of study, we visited Winakung, a Lenape Village, last week. We learned how they made clothing, tools, and baskets; how they hunted, fished and prepared food and how they took care of their children. We visited a longhouse and saw how they slept, how they cooked on open stoves, and how they stored food. We had a hands-on opportunity to grind corn, weave rope, play the same games Lenape children did and to play Native American drums. We are so excited to learn more about the Lenape tribe. |
