From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's,

Grace and peace. I enjoyed, very much, my short trip to Nebraska last week to visit my family and celebrate my aunt's 70th birthday. I am excited to be back at St. Patrick's as we quickly approach the August recess. I've heard reports that the dynamics of the city (and St. Patrick's) change during this time. If you are in town, please stay in touch and involved. If you are away, stay connected at
www.stpatrickschurchdc.org.

The website was recently reborn. Although it will continue to mature, it is already a great portal to stay in touch with St. Patrick's. It is also an easy way for those seeking a new church home to find us. From the homepage, you can easily link to recent sermons, the Wednesday "This Week" Email, and news of the Episcopal Church.

This is the last week of the Summer "Popcorn Theology" series. Tonight, at the home of Karen Melchar and Benno Schmidt, we will watch the family-friendly Millions (rated PG). On Sunday after the 10:00 am service, we will discuss the movie from a faith perspective. I hope that you can join in this fun fellowship. (See below for more details)

I also point you (see below) to an opportunity to join Bishop Chane and the Diocese of Washington on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this coming December. I was so excited by the opportunity (a long-time dream of mine) that I have already registered. If you are interested, please contact Tracy Dieter at the diocesan office. I plan on making a presentation, with pictures, on my return.

May your week be blessed.

Faithfully,
Kurt's Signature

Music
Handbell graphicWe have a special Handbell treat this Sunday. Emily Stillions will be back with us to play an awesome Handbell solo. Emily participated in St. Patrick's Peal as a "youth" a number of years ago. Now she has graduated college (Alfred University, Bachelor of Fine Arts) and is back in the area. She is finishing up the year-long "Team, Management and Leadership Program" and is working on a career in environmental sustainability. Keeping us "green"! Don't miss saying hello to Emily and seeing her in action on the Handbells!

And if you happen to be over on the Eastern Shore this weekend, you can catch our Haitian music concert on Saturday evening at the "shore church" of Brooke and Larry Myers, Holy Trinity at Oxford, Maryland. Jean-Luc will be singing a number of Haitian folksongs and artsongs, as well as songs from around the world representing the cultures that have brought people to Haiti and influenced the Haitian Creole language. The concert is at 7:30pm and the address is 502 South Morris St., Oxford, MD.

The Diocese of Washington is planning a 13-day journey to the Holy Land from Dec. 8-20 under the direction of Bishop John Bryson Chane and the Rev. Canon John L. Peterson with local guide and instructor Canon Iyad Qumri. The Rev. Dr. Kurt Gerhard will be participating. The goal of this trip is education and pilgrimage. There will be hiking (including steps) everyday, and the trip is described as an active journey, not a leisurely holiday.
If you are interested in joining the diocese and Kurt or want more information about the itinerary, please contact Tracy Dieter at 202/537-6545 or tdieter@edow.org. Registration is through the Diocese of Washington at http://edow.org/news/EDOWTripRegistration2010.pdf.
