Prismatic light on cross
St. Patrick's Episcopal Church
Washington, DC
August 4, 2010
From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's,

Grace and peace. I have a hard time believing that it is already August. The summer has been packed with some great opportunities to grow in our relationship with God. This is more than learning about the Bible, although St. Patrick's is filled with biblical reflection. This is more than serving others, although our parish is involved in a variety of ministries to serve Washington and the world. This is more than being in fellowship, although our parish has many opportunities to share in the journey.

I challenge you to "Try it again, for the first time." This was once the slogan for Kellogg's Corn Flakes. It used to drive me crazy, and, in some ways, still does. I mean how can you try something again, and it be your first time. As I have matured, I realize that to break out of the routines that take over our lives; we have to take a step back and begin anew. So, my challenge to you is to try St. Patrick's again, for the first time. I hope that you take the months of August and September to take an inventory of where you are and make a commitment to take new steps. If you need someone to listen or provide some insights, please schedule time with your clergy.

One important note for the week is that the email addresses of some of your favorite people have changed. A list of the new clergy and staff emails is listed below. If you forget, don't worry. The other addresses will redirect, automatically.

May your week be blessed.

Faithfully,

Music
BachWe have a little bit of Bach is on tap for us this Sunday. Our Soprano soloist Suzanne Carter will be here to sing the soprano aria from Bach's Cantata #76. Jean-Luc Princivil in his multi-talented way will join in accompanying her on the Violin.

Bach composed over 200 cantatas, each celebrating a Sunday in the church year. He often wrote one in the very week it was needed! Within the cantatas are choral sections as well as solos, duets and other ensembles. They are real gems of the Baroque era. This particular cantata uses words from Psalm 19, "The heavens declare the glory of God." Amen.

Fall Sunday School Begins September 19th.
Welcome GWU Students!
The Whole Month of August, Bring Items for Student Care Packages

Did you know that during the 2009-2010 school year, 4 GW students worshiped with us regularly?
In just a few weeks, these 4 will return, along with 500 of their classmates who will move into dorms across the street from St. Patrick's. The Mount Vernon Campus (or "The Vern" as students call it) is a satellite campus to the main Foggy Bottom location.
Through the GW E-news, we will invite students to worship with us on Sundays, specifically inviting them to our September 12 BBQ. In anticipation of students who might join us this fall, please consider donating items that we can tuck into gift bags which we will give them when they visit:
Rolls of quarters for coin-op laundry
Study snacks: peanut butter crackers, popcorn, candy, etc.
Metro Smart Cards
Safeway cards
New pens / pencils
D.C. postcards and stamps
Look for the collection bins outside the Nave.
Haiti Outreach: School Supplies
Marcy Ference, the Haiti Coordinator for St. Patrick's Day School, asks that as you shop for school supplies this August to remember that every year we send pencils, pens, crayons, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, composition books, erasers, scissors, colored paper, and white blackboard chalk to our friends at St. Etienne's and Christ Redempteur schools.
The need is great every year, but even more so now in the months after the earthquake. Please bring these (new only) items-there will be a bin at the stained glass windows on Sundays or in the Development Office during the week.
