From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's,
Grace and peace. There is so much taking place at St. Patrick's as we conclude the season after Epiphany and enter Lent. This Sunday, March 6, will be the Mardi Gras Jazz Eucharist and Bring-a-Friend Sunday. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce someone you know to St. Patrick's. This past month, the Griffiths (Kim and Beth) and the Jollys (Lauren, Ben, and Morgan) officially joined St. Patrick's. Morgan will be baptized at the Easter Vigil service on the evening of April 23. Please welcome them to the parish.
Shrove Tuesday is next week (March 8). Shrove is the past participle of the Old English word "shrive" meaning to hear confession and grant absolution. It was a tradition to go to confession before beginning the penitential season of Lent. The custom around this day before Lent is to prepare for the somber period with a party of high spirit. We celebrate with a feast of pancakes hosted by our Youth Group from 6:00-8:00pm (more information below). Pancakes became associated with this day because it was customary to get rid of all the fat, eggs, and sugar in preparation for the Lenten restriction on this kind of food (the food would also spoil during the 40 days of Lent before refrigeration and artificial preservatives). Shrove Tuesday is also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and Pancake Day [More Information].
Shrove Tuesday occurs only because of Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is one of the two fast days celebrated in the Episcopal tradition (the other is remembering Jesus' crucifixion and death on Good Friday). We mark Ash Wednesday with special services to renew our "repentance and faith" (Book of Common Prayer, 265). The service includes the Imposition of Ashes that begins our reflection on our earthly mortality and the gift of everlasting life celebrated on Easter. This year's Ash Wednesday services are at 12:30pm and 7:30pm. I hope that you will join your parish in this most solemn day marking the beginning of a holy Lent.
Faithfully,
Time to register for Summer Camp

Lenten Preparation Class 9:00am on Sunday, March 6th
Join our Seminarian Henry McQueen this Sunday morning from 9:00am to 9:50am for the last Sunday study of how a Rule of Life can impact your Lenten journey and your arrival at the Easter Resurrection. At our last session we will be prepared to begin our Lenten journey with Ash Wednesday just several days hence. You will be encouraged to live your own Rule of Life during Lent; with the celebration of Easter you can then choose whether to maintain, modify, or abandon your personal Rule of Life.

| God's Saving Deeds: A Biblical Exploration of Salvation
Please join the Rector for God's Saving Deeds: A Biblical Exploration of Salvation, a Lenten study at 9:00am on Sunday mornings beginning on Sunday, March 13.
Let us hear the record of God's saving deeds in history, how [God] saved [God's] people in ages past; and let us pray that our God will bring each of us to the fullness of redemption. (Book of Common Prayer, 288)
The above quote introduces the readings of scripture at the Easter Vigil ceremony held each year on the Saturday evening of Holy Week. The Vigil liturgy marks the transition from the Old to the New Covenant, from darkness to light, from Lent to Easter. The scriptural readings of that service point toward Easter as the central celebration of salvation for Christians, but remind us that God has been saving humans since the creation.
In this six-week Lenten education offering, we will read and explore the biblical narrative of salvation. The readings from the Easter Vigil will be the framework as we travel from Creation, through the history of the patriarchs and matriarchs, the prophetic period, and ultimately to Jesus' Resurrection. Although there will be a common theme and progression, each class session will stand-alone. For March 13, prepare by reading Genesis 1.1-2.2. |

Haiti Art Show
This year, St. Patrick's hosts its 21st annual Haitian Art Show and Sale from Friday, March 11, through Wednesday, March 16. We are fortunate to have received approximately 95 pieces of art that were salvaged from the ruins of the Rainbow Gallery in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. These paintings have never been displayed in the United States. Money raised through the sale continues to fund building projects in our partner community of St. Etienne.
For those who are not familiar with the show, St. Patrick's has worked with the Rainbow Gallery to show both traditional and contemporary artwork by Haitian artists. Tragically, Mrs. Carmel DeLatour, the founder and owner of the Rainbow Gallery, and her husband Cavor died in the earthquake, and the gallery was destroyed. Mrs. DeLatour opened her gallery in December 1972. Through the years, it has been extremely successful. Her son Lionel and grandson Bernard will again join us for the show this year.
Initially the Haitian Art Show was supported largely by St. Patrick's Episcopal Church. Over time, its reach has expanded significantly to include Day School families and others interested in Haitian art as well as collectors from New York and Boston. In the context of continuing difficulties in Haiti, we hope that you will join us for the show. Even if you do not purchase any of the artwork, please come to see these extraordinary examples of Haitian artistry. As always, we are grateful for your support.
