This Week at LCCC

Week of August 29, 2022

Welcome to the Fall 2022 Semester!

We are so glad you're here! We hope your semester gets off to a great start! Remember, college is about one thing: your becoming. No matter what major or courses you have selected, the purpose is to apply yourself to new ideas, new challenges, and new ways of thinking and doing. Your success will be determined by the kind of learner you become, so open yourself to the challenges you encounter. Then, celebrate the ways you have been changed by what you learned.

Advice from the LCCC Learning Specialists

Welcome to the fall 2022 term! The first week of college classes is an exciting time that can leave students rushing around feeling overwhelmed, lost, and/or confused.

Keep in mind:

  • You are not alone. Many students are just as nervous and anxious, some even more.
  • The feeling will pass. Everyone who attends college gets through it.
  • You know and we know you can be successful, but don't hesitate to ask for assistance. The college is here to support you.

If you're looking for more advice, check out this playlist, ask us for more help here, or contact LCCC Educational Support Services: educationalsupportservices@lccc.edu or 610-799-1156.

Remote Biology Lab Kit Pick-Up

The last day to pick up a kit is September 2.

You need a remote biology lab kit only if you are enrolled in a virtual lab section. Only BIO 101, 105, 110, 163, and 164 labs have virtual sections requiring a kit (Microbiology, BIO 220, does not require a kit).

You must bring a photo ID and your L#.

You can pick up your kit at our Schnecksville Campus in SH 119 following this schedule:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Kits will not be mailed to homes, but may be sent to either the Allentown or Tamaqua Campus for you to pick up there. Please email rdavis@lccc.edu to make such arrangements prior to September 2.

Please acquire your remote biology lab kit before it's too late.

Don’t forget to get your LCCC Student ID!

It is important. The ID cards are used to access college services — the library, computer labs, testing center, etc. You need it to check out library materials or use the campus gym facilities. If you are not wearing the card by clip or lanyard, you may be stopped by a college official and asked to identify yourself and your purpose on campus. You may be asked to retrieve your card.

And here’s the cool part - in the community, the card can be used for discounts at area eateries like Back Home Bagels and The Red Tomato.

If you are enrolled in at least one class, just bring one (1) valid government-issued photo ID and your college issued L# to the Office of Registration and Student Records located in the Student Services Center, Office 122 at Main Campus or at the Donley or Morgan Centers. See the attached schedule for available times.

Preferred First Name, Pronouns and Gender Identification

It is easy to change and submit your preferred first name, pronouns and gender to LCCC. Just go to the LCCC portal. Sign in with your LCCC username and password. See the attached step-by-step instructions. If you need technical assistance, go to Student Technology Help Desk.

Pop-Up Shop at Morgan Center

The LCCC bookstore will be hosting a pop-up shop at the Morgan Center in Tamaqua on Tuesday, August 30, and Wednesday, August 31, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The temporary shop will carry school supplies and LCCC gear. Students interested in ordering books can order them online here and have them sent to the Morgan Center, where they can be picked up at the front desk. For more information, email bookstore@lccc.edu or call 610-799-1126.

Mental Health Minutes from the LCCC Counseling Center

Practice self-care and make yourself a priority.

Set goals and priorities. Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Learn to say "no" to new tasks if you start to feel like you're taking on too much. Try to be mindful of what you have accomplished at the end of the day, not what you have been unable to do.

CDC Updates COVID-19 Guidance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledged that COVID-19 is "here to stay" and updated its guidance accordingly. The guidance no longer differentiates between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, but continues to promote that individuals stay up-to-date with vaccinations.

The CDC advises that those exposed to COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, do not need to quarantine. Exposed individuals without symptoms should wear a high-quality mask for 10 days and get tested on day five. Individuals who suspect they have COVID-19 due to experiencing symptoms should isolate and get tested. Those who test negative can end isolation, while those who test positive must isolate for at least five days.

The CDC further recommends:

  • If, after five days, you are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication, and your symptoms are improving, or you never had symptoms, you may end isolation after day five.
  • Regardless of when you end isolation, avoid being around people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 until at least day 11.
  • You should wear a high-quality mask through day 10.

The guidance represents a strong shift from institutional direction to individual responsibility. So, we all must make choices to keep ourselves healthy and keep each other safe from exposure. Please stay home if you are ill.

Additional CDC guidance can be found here. The LCCC COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan has been updated accordingly.
