Former Head of Israel's National Rescue Unit, Col. Golan Vach, visited ICJA.
Juniors and Seniors heard from Col. Golan Vach, former head of the IDF's National Rescue Unit.
|
On Thursday this week, juniors and seniors heard from Col. Golan Vach, former head of the IDF's famed National Rescue Unit of the Home Front Command, which has assisted in some of the most difficult disaster rescues and humanitarian aid missions around the world. The unit operates search and rescue missions, aiding in rescue and recovery from terror attacks, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters.
Col. Vach described rescue operations he's participated in and showed videos of rescues. He noted that after last year's devastating earthquake in Turkey, Israeli rescuers saved more lives than any other nation's rescue teams. Col. Vach also described the huge challenges facing Israel as it battles Hamas and attempts to rescue Israeli hostages in Gaza, describing a mission that required 3,000 Israeli soldiers to rescue two hostages last month.
Col. Vach concluded by offering words of advice to our students about ways they can help Israel, including seeing the good in Israel and refraining from lashon harah about the Jewish state. "Achdut is the secret sauce," Col. Vach told our students, before thanking them for the many actions our students have already undertaken.

|
How did Europeans during the Age of Exploration view native people in the new lands they encountered? What were they expecting to find in undiscovered lands? What did they fear about travelling far from home?
On Tuesday, freshmen in Mrs. Rachel Polsky's Western Civilization class took advantage of the nice weather to head outdoors where they read Age of Exploration documents shedding light on these and other questions.

|
On January 30, Israeli soccer player Sagiv Jehezkel was arrested in Turkey after showing fans his bandaged wrist, which had "100 days," a Magen David, and "7.10" written on it, a reminder of the Israeli hostages still being held captive in Gaza. Jehezkel wass charged with "inciting hatred".
This week, sophomores in Mrs. Marmel's honors Hebrew class read about the event and discussed it - conducting their research and conversations entirely in Hebrew, of course.

|
Seniors in Rabbi Menachem Rosenbaum's Chumash class headed outside during the beautiful weather this week to discuss the "bystander effect." which posits that individuals are less likely to offer help in the presence of other people.
Students then debated how the bystander effect informs the Biblical episode of Joseph being sold by his brothers. While only some of Joseph's brothers instigated his kidnapping and enslavement, other brothers failed to intervene and stop them, students discussed.

Spotlight on Mrs. Michelle Prince
This week we caught up with ICJA English teacher Mrs. Michelle Prince '05 and asked her a bit about herself.
|
Mrs. Michelle Prince '05 joined ICJA's faculty this year, teaching English. She has a long history at Ida Crown, having attended the school as part of the Class of 2005. This week we caught up with Mrs. Prince and asked her a few questions about herself.
Where did you grow up? And where do you live now?
I grew up in Highland Park. Today I live in Skokie with my husband Josh and my children Ahuvah (7), Eden (4), and Donny (4).
How did you decide to go into teaching?
I've always loved literature and reading and being able to discuss reading. I attended college at Northwestern, where I was an English major. I did a teaching practicum and fell in love with teaching.
What's something you love about ICJA?
I love that life is coming back full circle for me: some of my current colleagues are my former teachers. I love the sense of community here and the mission of the school, providing an excellent education with strong Jewish values.
Where did you work before teaching here?
Before joining ICJA, I taught at Taft High School, a CPS school, for ten years. One of my students was Krista Pederson, ICJA Math Department chair Mrs. Stephanie Pederson's daughter!
What's one of your favorite ICJA memories?
When I was a student here, retreats were an incredible time to bond with my classmates. Senior retreat was particularly memorable.
I had Mrs. Orit Marmel for several years for Hebrew; I learned a lot and had fun too in her class.
Mrs. Sheri Goldstein was my senior AP English teacher. Now I'm teaching many of the works I first encountered in her class, works like Jane Eyre and Hamlet. That's one of the most incredible things about working here.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy reading. I like hosting people for meals. I also enjoy yoga.
What are some of your favorite books?
It's difficult for me to choose a favorite: what I consider a favorite is always changing. My all-time favorite, though, is Little Women.
Do you have any advice for ICJA students?
Yes - take this time seriously, and also enjoy it and have fun. Strike that balance. Take your academics seriously and recognize the opportunity you have to attend such a great school - but also enjoy your time here.
