When a Leader Says the Wrong Thing
This past Shabbat we held our last "School Service Family Shabbat" of the year. No surprise, the overall theme was Mother's Day. During the service, I asked if women who had experienced pregnancy would be willing to explain what it felt like when they first realized something was different; that a new "light of life" (an ohr chadash) was inside. A few spoke beautifully and nostalgically, but here's why this was an inappropriate question. The idea was to celebrate mothers, not pregnancy, and after all, there are ways a woman can become a mom that do not involve becoming pregnant - for example, adoption. I failed to lift up and celebrate each path to motherhood. In addition, as I know from my own life, a woman can feel the "light of life" inside and then suffer the anguish of a pregnancy that fails. And then there are those who always wanted a child but it just never happened. So in far too many ways, and much to my regret, my words resulted in hurt and upset. Not the shul experience anyone is looking for.
After services were over, a few congregants came up to me in a more private setting and, with kindness, compassion and thoughtfulness filled me in on the painful impact my words had on some of those present. I immediately had one of those "Ah-ha - oh, no, I've messed up" moments. It meant a lot to me personally when they added, "Rabbi, we know you and that your intentions were only for good. It just didn't come off well. It's important to be more careful." The bottom line is that I blew it. I said the wrong thing. I hurt people's feelings and for that I truly and deeply apologize.
I do know that it isn't always easy to tell someone they have made a mistake and it might be even more difficult for some to say it to their Rabbi. But the truth is the truth and it seems to me the only way to correct an error is to be made aware of it. So I want to thank those who spoke to me directly and those who asked a trusted other to do so on their behalf. Also and especially I want to thank each person for the menschy way this was brought to my attention.
Rabbi Chanina said, "I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues, but the most from my students". Talmud

Grant Writers and Researchers Needed!
In our effort to complete the Capital Campaign and sustain the long-term financial security of CBSBH, the Capital Campaign committee seeks volunteers to assist with research and identification of viable grant opportunities, as well as prepare and submit grant applications, letters of inquiry and formal proposals. If you have any experience in these areas, we kindly ask for your help.
There will be periodic meetings, but much of the work can be done independently and on your own schedule. It's a great way to get involved, support your community at CBSBH with your time and talent, and have a positive impact on the Jewish community of the South Shore.
