Spring Intermezzo B. Jackson-King
Opening Hymn Morning Has Broken, Bunesson
I am the bread of life
Sacred Space India.Arie
Thank You, Lord
My Soul the King of Heaven, Northhampton; desc. M. Walker
Organ Postlude Prelude in B-flat Major, from Partita No. 1 J.S. Bach
Kate Saphir Alm:
This morning I am playing an assortment of piano music: from the postlude, which I've played for decades and grew up hearing in my childhood home, and always fills me with a sense of hope and possibility, to the Prelude written by African American composer, Betty Jackson King, (1928-1994) and who was a composer, choral conductor, and educator. Her Spring Intermezzo is both airy and harmonically intriguing and sets a mood of reverence and of depth for this worship service. Lastly, I love to share India.Arie's song, Sacred Space: an ode to the Divine. It is part of my programming for the Musical Soulmates event on September 22: Let the Caged Bird Sing II, and will in that context be shared among three singers.

Bricks will shape the labyrinth and provide the lines for the pathways. But not just any bricks! Labyrinth designer Lars Howlett suggested McNear bricks which are made from recycled content and appear more rustic than standard bricks. Cathy and Tom Watson recently journeyed to the McNear factory in San Rafael and returned with samples and photos of various colorways to consider in choosing bricks for Calvary's project. Stop by the Fireside Room this Sunday, August 18, to review the samples, ask questions, and provide input. The Labyrinth Project team will make the decision at their next meeting. McNear recommends ordering in early September to guarantee availability for the October 26 community build day. It's getting closer and closer to reality! Exciting!!
Liturgy literally means "work of the people." Preparing for worship is dependent on the Altar Guild. To create a warm, welcoming and safe first impression, Greeters and Ushers are the key. The Ministry of the Word relies on Lectors who will read scripture and prayers aloud. Acolytes assist worship by carrying the cross and lighting candles. Eucharistic Ministers deliver communion elements to the people. All are vital to worship. Please consider where you can participate. You will benefit and grow as much as those you serve! Thursdays -10:00 am
Each week a different Saint is taken from Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2022. The Order of Service is from The 1928 Prayer Book. Participants read the canticles, and the first and second lesson. The service takes about 30 minutes, is very informal and a great way to focus your day. All are invited!!

Make a Joyful Noise!
Last Sunday was the final service with the Summer Choir. Music Director, Murray Walker, headed off on a four-week holiday. We are grateful to our summer Choral Scholars, Lydia Barrett and Gavin Pinnow, and our volunteer choir members for supporting our worship this summer. With the choir off for the next four weeks, Organist, Kate Saphir, will lead the music with hymns chosen by a sub-group of our Worship Committee. We need all voices on deck! Sing with your hearts and raise the Calvary roof!

Gavin Pinnow hearkens from Davis and studied at UCSC earning degrees in both music and history. He studied voice with UCSC’s Sheila Willey since 2020 and performed multiple productions with the opera program.
