WALKING FOR THE RELEASE OF THE HOSTAGES

HELD BY HAMAS

Michelle Sarna, who with her husband, Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, leads the NYU-Bronfman Center, has organized the students and local community in a walk around Washington Square Park and Union Square Park to help bring awareness to the plight of the hostages being held in Gaza and to show support for the people of Israel.

This Shabbat we meet at 2:30 PM in front of the Bronfman Center (7 East 10th Street) and carry posters as we walk around Washington Square Park, then Union Square Park, and finish with words and prayers at University Place just below 14 Street.

The plan is for this to be a weekly activity until the hostages are freed. Please join us. עם ישראל חי

Lag Ba'Omer

Lag BaOmer (Hebrew: לַ״ג בָּעוֹמֶר‎, LaG Bāʿōmer), also Lag B'Omer or Lag LaOmer, is a Jewish religious holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar.

According to some of the Rishonim, it is the day on which the plague that killed Rabbi Akiva's 24,000 disciples came to an end, and for this reason the mourning period of the Counting of the Omer concludes on Lag BaOmer in many communities.

According to modern kabbalah, this day is the Hillula of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and/or the anniversary of his death. According to a late medieval tradition, Simeon ben Yochai is buried in Meron, and this association has spawned several well-known customs and practices on Lag BaOmer, including the lighting of bonfires and pilgrimages to Meron

Additionally, in modern-day Israel, the holiday also serves to commemorate the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Romans.

Yiddish for Beginners

Due to popular request, we are considering starting a

YIDDISH FOR BEGINNERS CLASS AT CSFA.

Eve Jochnowitz, a CSFA member and an experienced Yiddish instructor at YIVO and the Workers Circle, has agreed to teach the course.

Course Goals: A basic course for students with some familiarity with the Alef-beys.

The class will practice listening, reading, speaking, and writing Yiddish in easily accessible situations.

Course ToolsYiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vol. 1

by Sheva Zucker with supplementary basic reading texts and songs provided by the instructor.

To order the book click here.

This will be an in-person class and knowledge of the aleph – beys is required.

For a crash course in the Yiddish alef-beys, click here

This site is also useful for people familiar with the Hebrew aleph-beit, as there are some differences.

The plan is for eight sessions during the months of May and June – on the evenings of

May 9, May 16, May 23, May 30, June 6, June 10, June 20, and June 27th,

from 7:00 to 8:30 PM

The cost for the series of 8 classes is $200 per person, and we need at least 8 people to register for us to proceed. Of course, if we do not get 8 people we will refund all registration deposits.

To register now, please CLICK HERE.

Feel free to invite friends and family from outside the congregation to register and join us for this class.

Please email Roselle Mironer at mironer166@gmail.com with any questions you may have. Thank you.

6 Iyar 5784

Dear Member or Friend of CSFA:

We are in the middle of a very difficult and troubling year for the Jewish community in Israel, in the United States, and throughout the world. The October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, the tragic loss of life, the abduction of innocent women, children, men, young, and old who are still being held hostage, and Israel’s response to the violation of its sovereignty, have unleashed a torrent of antisemitism and anti-Israel protests throughout the world.

Throughout this time many within our community have felt the desire and need to return to the comfort of our synagogue … and CSFA has been there with its doors wide open and its lights shining brightly welcoming everyone to services, classes, and social activities. The need for the light of the synagogue is greatest when it is darkest outside. This, then, is the perfect time to announce our CSFA Journal and Annual Gala, honoring Norma Rosenthal, which will take place on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

The Journal is a crucial part of our annual fundraising program. We encourage you to honor Norma, who is always the first one to greet you when you come to visit CSFA and who donates hours of her time each week to assist wherever needed. The Journal is also a place to pay tribute to a friend or relative, recognize the synagogue leadership, or memorialize a loved one by placing an ad in our journal. We encourage you to reach out to local businesses to place ads as well.

In spite of the challenges, we have managed to maintain a full synagogue roster of activities. Last August Rabbi Mitchell Blank assumed the position of Rabbi of our congregation, and we are pleased that his Tuesday night Torah Portion of the Week Classes are always well attended.  It is now time, as Spring unfolds, to recommit ourselves to this center of Jewish life in our lives.

Dig deep – all of us must share in the commitment to CSFA, so we can be assured of a strong and vital spiritual home, now and into the future. It is important for each of us to take responsibility and to contribute financially as best we can to support our synagogue.

Now is the time to show your appreciation and to honor Norma and our community.

Thank you.

SCENTS AND SENSITIVITY: As we dress up and accessorize for Shabbat and holidays, we know that many members use personal fragrances (perfume, cologne, etc.) to enhance their Shabbat experience. A number of congregants have shared that fragrances can be overwhelming or harmful to the health of others who may suffer from respiratory issues and allergies. Please consider reducing your use of fragrance use when you are in the synagogue. Thank you.
