11 - 18 Nisan 5784

Parshat Metzora

Shabbat HaGadol

The Sabbath immediately preceding Passover is called Shabbat HaGadol, the great Sabbath. According to tradition, the 10th of Nisan in the year of the exodus was a Saturday. It was considered a great event, in fact a miracle, that the Israelites could on that day select a lamb for sacrifice without being molested by their Egyptian masters, who, at other times, would have stoned them for such daring (Code of Jewish Law, Orach Chayyim 430)

Another possible reason for the name is that the haftarah (Malachi 3:4-24), the prophetic portion, speaks of the “great day” of God on which the Messiah will appear. A novel explanation for the name of Shabbat HaGadol is that the people used to return from the synagogue later than usual on this Sabbath because of the unusually long sermon that was customary on this day.

The custom of reciting the Haggadah in the afternoon of Shabbat HaGadol was designed to familiarize the people with its contents in preparation for the Seder service that week (Code of Jewish Law, Orach Chayyim 430).

WALKING FOR THE RELEASE OF THE HOSTAGES

HELD BY HAMAS

Michelle Sarna, who with her husband, Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, leads the NYU-Bronfman Center, has organized the students and local community in a walk around Washington Square Park and Union Square Park to help bring awareness to the plight of the hostages being held in Gaza and to show support for the people of Israel.

This Shabbat we meet at 2:00 PM in front of the Bronfman Center (7 East 10th Street) and carry posters as we walk around Washington Square Park, then Union Square Park, and finish with words and prayers at University Place just below 14 Street.

The plan is for this to be a weekly activity until the hostages are freed. Please join us. עם ישראל חי

After Sundown

Bedikat Hametz

The search for Hametz begins. After the house has been cleaned, we search once again for any remnant of Hametz we may have missed. We use a candle, a feather, and a wooden spoon … but the search can take place even without these traditional tools. This symbolizes that all the Hametz which was in the house was removed. This service can be found in any Haggadah.

Siyyum B’Chorim: On the day before Passover, first born are required to fast, to commemorate their having been spared the fate of the first born Egyptians at the time of the Exodus. However, if one participates in the conclusion of a course of study, one may eat since refreshments follow the study session.

Biur Hametz – Burning of the Hametz: We burn the Hametz that was found during the search that took place the night before. Use a large can or similar container. This ceremony should take place in the morning. This service can can be found in any Haggadah. Hametz should not be consumed after the morning on Monday, April 22, and all hametz not sold or otherwise disposed of should be burned We will be burning hametz in the CSFA garden at 10:00 in the morning on MONDAY, APRIL 22.

SCENTS AND SENSITIVITY: As we dress up and accessorize for Shabbat and holidays, we know that many members use personal fragrances (perfume, cologne, etc.) to enhance their Shabbat experience. A number of congregants have shared that fragrances can be overwhelming or harmful to the health of others who may suffer from respiratory issues and allergies. Please consider reducing your use of fragrance use when you are in the synagogue. Thank you.
