WesternU celebrates first Trustee Scholars

Five impressive and inspiring Western University of Health Sciences students are the first to receive “life-changing” WesternU Board of Trustees scholarships.


The WesternU Board of Trustees created a $6 million endowed scholarship earlier this year to help remove financial barriers for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and increase student diversity in graduate health sciences and the health professions workforce.


The inaugural Trustee Scholars are:

Martin Allums, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific – Northwest

Allison Belaunde, College of Veterinary Medicine

Tenzin Choedon, College of Optometry

Hye (Hanna) Chu, College of Health Sciences, Physician Assistant Studies

Dámaris Abigail Garza, College of Graduate Nursing, MSN-E program

U.S. Rep. Norma Torres visits WesternU

U.S. Rep. Norma J. Torres and her district director, Anthony Leymore, met with WesternU President Robin Farias-Eisner, MD, PhD, MBA, and WesternU Vice President for Community & Governmental Affairs Jeff Keating, MA, on Aug. 23 to talk about behavioral health, community partnerships, the University’s growth plans and other topics of mutual interest.


Torres represents California's 35th Congressional District in the Inland Empire, which includes Bloomington, Chino, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Pomona, and Rialto.  

Faculty, Administration and Staff Appreciation Lunch

Western University of Health Sciences President Robin Farias-Eisner, MD, PhD, MBA, held appreciation lunches for faculty, administration and staff in Lebanon, Oregon on July 28 and Pomona, California on Aug. 9, marking the largest employee gatherings he has presided over since becoming president on March 1, 2022.


The goal of these lunches was to convey his gratitude and to cultivate a congenial atmosphere as more in-person activities return.


“What I want to convey to all of you is sincere gratitude on behalf of the entire University,” Farias-Eisner said. “It well characterizes my feelings standing here today before you. And the fact that we’re here in person, that’s a big deal. And I’m grateful for that.”

Monkeypox updates

Student-Employee Health leadership has updated their website with valuable information on monkeypox. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal.

WesternU Oregon news

An interprofessional team of students and faculty from COMP-Northwest and CHS-Northwest provided prevention and acute care to elite adolescent athletes in Oregon.


Each year, Foster Athletics hosts an annual Oregon All State Football game for invited student athletes who have excelled during the previous football season from sixth to 11th grades. All proceeds go to Foster Kids of Oregon. COMP-Northwest Professor Brion Benninger, MD, MBChB, MSc-Sports Medicine, Executive Director, Medical Anatomy Center, was the Chief Health and Safety Officer for the event and collaborated with CHS-Northwest Executive Vice Dean and Department of Physical Therapy Education – Oregon Chair Chad Lairamore, PT, PhD, FNAP, CHS-Northwest Assistant Professor Christina Gomez, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS, along with Samaritan colleagues, to provide services during the weeklong practices at Oregon State University and the games.


Second-year COMP-Northwest students David Beckett, Charles Antonowicz, and Conor Davenport and second-year CHS-Northwest students Bradley Davis and Warren Dijamco also volunteered their time to help the athletes. Dr. Benninger brought innovation to the sidelines with a wireless handheld GE Vscan air ultrasound unit.


“To volunteer, work as a team, provide a service while learning & teaching with all proceeds going to foster kids of Oregon…its doesn’t get better then that!” Benninger said.

CVM Professor Tracey McNamara, DVM, DACVP, received a 2021 Rosalind Franklin Society (RFS) Award in Science, recognizing outstanding published peer-reviewed research by women and underrepresented minorities in STEM. RFS, in partnership with Mary Ann Liebert Inc., launched this prestigious annual award for the best paper by a woman or under-represented minority in science in each of the publisher’s 100 peer-reviewed journals with the goal of highlighting the important contributions of these scientists and providing role models and mentors for younger scientists following in their footsteps, according to the Mary Ann Liebert website.
