This week we celebrate Epiphany (which means to show forth) — the 12th day of Christmas, when the Wise Men, the Magi, guided by the star visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
Growing up, our neighbor across the street was a Presbyterian minister and a well-respected theology professor, who had spent his formative years in England. He and his wife always decorated their house for Christmas, but each year, rather than having a gathering or party before Christmas, they had what they called a “twelfth night party,” usually either on Epiphany itself or as close as they could arrange the party to it.
I always thought that was really cool and creative, and a way to make the holiday festivities last a whole lot longer, but as I have grown older, I begin to see some hidden theological wisdom behind it. It was Rev. Gordon’s way of reminding his friends, neighbors and colleagues that Christmas does not necessarily come to an abrupt end on December 25th but rather, the coming of Jesus, is really just the beginning of the story. It continues to day twelve and beyond.
Howard Thurman, the great theologian, also had a message on Epiphany which is wisdom for the ages:
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among others,
To make music in the heart.
Thurman titled this piece, “The Work of Christmas.” The work of Christmas, the real work of Christmas begins now. And I am not sure whether I have shared this wisdom with you before, and if I did, I apologize, but I like to read it each year at this time as a reminder to myself.
So let the real work of Christmas begin! I look forward to doing that work with each one of you who I know is committed to making our world a better place for all. Fondly, Tracey

Social Justice Day

Are you eager to promote policies in our society that reflect God’s desire for justice and equity, peace and wholeness but don’t know where to start? Here is the perfect opportunity for you!
Join members of Ascension’s Equity and Justice Committee in attending Social Justice Day on Saturday, January 20, 2024. This event is a joint effort by the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MEPPN), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and the Bishops of the Diocese of Maryland and the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We will gather in the Delaplaine Barn at the Claggett Center, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, to worship and reflect on the Gospel imperatives as they relate to our activity in the public arena. Also, breakout sessions with advocates from around the state will allow us to hear the stories of those impacted directly by the issues that inform our legislative priorities.
This is an in-person and virtual event. Those who wish to attend virtually will be sent a link to join us closer to the event.
Registration opens at 8:00 AM; the event begins at 9:30 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to in-person attendees. There is no cost to attend.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is on January 21 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. HOSPITALITY ANGELS
Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

Ascension Youth will gather for fun and food in celebration of the season on January 7th at 6 pm at SkyZone in Gaithersburg.

- We will jump for one hour and then have dinner together. So plan on 6 pm drop off and 8:15 pm pick up. While the cost is $20 per youth, we have scholarships for anyone unable to pay. All are welcome including older students home for break! I will need a final head count of “jumpers” by Friday Jan 5.

Esta semana celebramos la Epifanía (que significa mostrar), el duodécimo día de Navidad, cuando los Reyes Magos, guiados por la estrella, visitaron al niño Jesús en Belén.
Mientras crecía, nuestro vecino de enfrente era un ministro presbiteriano y un respetado profesor de teología, que había pasado sus años de formación en Inglaterra. Él y su esposa siempre decoraban su casa para Navidad, pero cada año, en lugar de celebrar una reunión o fiesta antes de Navidad, hacían lo que llamaban una "fiesta de la duodécima noche", normalmente el mismo día de la Epifanía o lo más cerca que podían organizar la fiesta de ella.
Siempre pensé que eso era muy guay y creativo, y una forma de hacer que las fiestas navideñas duraran mucho más, pero a medida que me he ido haciendo mayor, empiezo a ver cierta sabiduría teológica oculta detrás de ello. Era la forma que tenía el reverendo Gordon de recordar a sus amigos, vecinos y colegas que la Navidad no llega necesariamente a un final abrupto el 25 de diciembre, sino que la venida de Jesús, en realidad, es sólo el principio de la historia. Continúa hasta el día doce y más allá.
Howard Thurman, el gran teólogo, también tenía un mensaje sobre la Epifanía que es sabiduría para las edades:
Cuando el canto de los ángeles se acalla,
Cuando la estrella del cielo se haya ido,
Cuando los reyes y los príncipes estén en casa,

Thurman tituló esta pieza "La obra de la Navidad". El trabajo de la Navidad, el verdadero trabajo de la Navidad comienza ahora. Y no estoy seguro de si he compartido esta sabiduría con ustedes antes, y si lo he hecho, les pido disculpas, pero me gusta leerla cada año por estas fechas como un recordatorio para mí mismo.

Día de la Justicia Social

¿Está ansioso por promover políticas en nuestra sociedad que reflejen el deseo de Dios de justicia y equidad, paz y plenitud, pero no sabe por dónde empezar? ¡He aquí la oportunidad perfecta para usted!
Únase a los miembros del Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión para asistir al Día de la Justicia Social el sábado 20 de enero de 2024. Este evento es un esfuerzo conjunto de la Red Episcopal de Política Pública de Maryland (MEPPN), la Comisión de la Verdad y la Reconciliación (TRC) y los obispos de la diócesis de Maryland y del Sínodo de Delaware-Maryland de la Iglesia Evangélica Luterana en América (ELCA). Nos reuniremos en el Granero Delaplaine del Centro Claggett, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, para rendir culto y reflexionar sobre los imperativos del Evangelio en relación con nuestra actividad en el ámbito público. Además, las sesiones de trabajo con defensores de todo el estado nos permitirán escuchar las historias de aquellos afectados directamente por las cuestiones que informan nuestras prioridades legislativas.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. Y por favor, considere la posibilidad de proporcionar suministros, incluso si usted no puede estar allí para ayudar con el embolsado. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD
¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.
