Dear Ascension Family,
Some days ago, a friend of mine asked me what my New Year’s resolutions were. My first thought was, “Oh my God, it’s been three weeks since I made my resolutions for 2024”. I told him the things I am trying to accomplish this year and he shared with me a significant achievement he just had accomplished. But, when asked how he would celebrate, he noted how he hasn’t even thought about that.
As we’ve been preparing for the Annual Meeting and thinking back on all the things we did last year, I’m thankful for the regular opportunity it affords us to reflect on and celebrate all that we’ve done together. Sometimes we can get so focused on our goals, and so busy with life in general, we don’t pause to mark our achievements. We just keep pushing and pushing when what really might benefit us is taking a moment to acknowledge all that's taken place.
This Sunday, I hope you will join me after the 10:00 service (please remember that we have just one service) for the Annual Meeting. We will have a 10-minute break for people to go downstairs and get some coffee and donuts. After that we will begin with our meeting.
I am also thrilled with the slate of Vestry Candidates our Nominating Committee has put forth. If you went to the Candidates Forum last week you got to know them a bit better but you can also read their information that was sent by email last week. Each of them brings unique gifts and experiences which are well suited to areas of leadership needed at Ascension.
Please review the Annual Meeting packet before the meeting, if possible, especially the proposed budget for 2024 and minutes from last year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or text or email me or anyone on the Vestry. We have been working very hard in preparation for our meeting. We also aim to have a smooth and efficient meeting, so any questions we can respond to or be aware of beforehand will help us in doing so.
I look forward to a morning of celebrating and giving thanks for the blessings of last year with hearts open and in anticipation of what God is calling us to next.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is on January 21 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. HOSPITALITY ANGELS
Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

2024 PLEDGE PAYMENT
If your 2024 pledge is supposed to be paid via automatic transaction taken out on Realm, please double check that it was actually taken out and that it's shown on your Realm account. We have heard from a few parishioners that their pledge was not taken out.

FLOWER DONATIONS
If you donated toward our Altar flowers - or any flower donations – electronically on Realm, please inform Jesse or Julie in an email of the date and, if needed, the reason for the donation (i.e., in honor / in memory / in thanksgiving for name, or just to the glory of God, etc.) Realm doesn't notify us of flower donations. You can also use an empty flower donation envelope, noting on the outside that payment has been made on Realm.

On Thursdays during Lent, we will have a simple shared supper of soup at 6:00 p.m. followed by Holy Eucharist in the main church at 7:00 p.m.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
This fun annual event will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Come join us to celebrate Mardi Gras, Carnival, Fat Tuesday or Martes Gordo...and it’s a good excuse to have pancakes and sausage! This event needs lots of helpers AND lots of attendees, “the more, the merrier!” If you have an instrument you would like to play or if you have a fun activity or games, contact Padre Javier at frjavier@ascensionmd.org

ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 14
We will celebrate the Holy Eucharist and offer the Imposition of Ashes at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. in the main church. The evening service will be bilingual. “Ashes to Go” will be offered again this year for morning commuters at the Shady Grove Metro Station between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. We need volunteers to come and help with prayers and administering the ashes.

JOIN US FOR FREE EXERCISE CLASS
Happy New Year! Is exercise or increased movement one of your New Year's resolutions? Weight Loss? Do you want a stronger core? Looking to improve your posture? Reduce back, neck, or shoulder stiffness/pain? Are you looking to cross-train to improve your primary form of exercise?
Pilates is an excellent exercise form that addresses all of the above and can be done by all ages.
Join us at 6-7pm on 1/22; 1/29; 2/5; and/or 2/12 for mat Pilates class in Parish Hall with Marcia, IM=X certified Pilates instructor. No previous experience necessary. All levels of fitness welcome. NEXT YOUTH GROUP IS SUNDAY

Our next Youth group is Sunday Jan 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the undercroft. All are welcome! Please plan to attend as a special activity of forming posters representing the “Stations of the Cross” will take place. These posters will be used during Lent by the congregation. Many hands make light work! Dinner will be provided and fun games will be played as well.

Querida familia de la Ascensión,
Hace unos días, una amiga me preguntó cuáles eran mis propósitos para el Año Nuevo. Mi primer pensamiento fue: "Dios mío, hace tres semanas que hice mis propósitos para 2024". Le conté las cosas que estoy intentando lograr este año y él compartió conmigo un importante logro que acababa de conseguir. Pero, cuando le pregunté cómo lo celebraría, señaló que ni siquiera había pensado en ello.
Mientras nos preparamos para la Reunión Anual y recordamos todas las cosas que hicimos el año pasado, estoy agradecido por la oportunidad que nos brinda periódicamente de reflexionar y celebrar todo lo que hemos hecho juntos. A veces podemos estar tan centrados en nuestros objetivos, y tan ocupados con la vida en general, que no nos detenemos a señalar nuestros logros. Seguimos empujando y empujando cuando lo que realmente podría beneficiarnos es tomarnos un momento para reconocer todo lo que ha tenido lugar.
Este domingo, espero que se una a mí después del servicio de las 10:00 (por favor, recuerde que sólo tenemos un servicio) para la Reunión Anual. Tendremos un descanso de 10 minutos para que la gente baje a tomar café y donuts. Después comenzaremos con nuestra reunión.
También estoy encantado con la lista de candidatos a la Junta Parroquial que ha presentado nuestro Comité de Candidaturas. Si asistió al Foro de Candidatos la semana pasada pudo conocerlos un poco mejor pero también puede leer su información que se envió por correo electrónico la semana pasada. Cada uno de ellos aporta dones y experiencias únicas que se adaptan bien a las áreas de liderazgo necesarias en Ascensión.
Por favor, revisen el paquete de la Reunión Anual antes de la reunión, si es posible, especialmente el presupuesto propuesto para 2024 y las actas del año pasado. Si tiene alguna pregunta, no dude en llamarme, enviarme un mensaje de texto o un correo electrónico a mí o a cualquiera de los miembros de la Junta Parroquial. Hemos estado trabajando muy duro en la preparación de nuestra reunión. También pretendemos tener una reunión fluida y eficiente, por lo que cualquier pregunta que podamos responder o conocer de antemano nos ayudará a conseguirlo.
Espero con ilusión una mañana de celebración y agradecimiento por las bendiciones del año pasado, con los corazones abiertos y a la espera de lo que Dios nos llame a hacer a continuación.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. Y por favor, considere la posibilidad de proporcionar suministros, incluso si usted no puede estar allí para ayudar con el embolsado. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD
¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.

CENA DE PANQUEQUES DEL MARTES DE CARNAVAL
Este divertido evento anual tendrá lugar el martes 13 de febrero de 2023 a las 6:30 p.m. en el Salón Parroquial. Venga a celebrar con nosotros el Mardi Gras, Carnaval, Martes Gordo... ¡y es una buena excusa para comer panqueques y salchichas! Este evento necesita muchos ayudantes Y muchos asistentes, "¡cuantos más, mejor!". EL MIERCOLES DE CENIZA ES EL 14 DE FEBRERO
Celebraremos la Santa Eucaristía y ofreceremos la Imposición de la Ceniza a las 12:00 del mediodía y a las 7:00 de la tarde en la iglesia principal. El servicio de la tarde será bilingüe. "Ceniza para llevar" se ofrecerá de nuevo este año para los viajeros matutinos en la estación de metro de Shady Grove entre las 7:00 a.m. y las 9:00 a.m. Necesitamos voluntarios que vengan a ayudar con las oraciones y la administración de la ceniza.

ÚNASE A NOSOTROS PARA UNA CLASE DE EJERCICIO GRATUITA
¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ¿Es el ejercicio o el aumento del movimiento uno de sus propósitos de Año Nuevo? ¿Perder peso? ¿Quiere un núcleo más fuerte? ¿Busca mejorar su postura? ¿Reducir la rigidez/dolor de espalda, cuello u hombros? ¿Busca un entrenamiento cruzado para mejorar su forma principal de ejercicio?
Pilates es una excelente forma de ejercicio que aborda todo lo anterior y puede ser realizado por todas las edades.
Únase a nosotros a las 6-7pm el 1/22; 1/29; 2/5; y/o 2/12 para la clase de Pilates mat en el Salón Parroquial con Marcia, instructora certificada de Pilates IM=X. No es necesaria experiencia previa.
