Epiphany and Jesus Baptism
Have you ever wondered what we celebrate in the Epiphany? Every year after the New Year we get together to celebrate something that we called Epiphany. After my sermon last week when I talked about “the star” many people made comments about it, but one person asked me to talk more about Epiphany and its true meaning.
The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal", “to manifest.” All of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to humanity.
Like many of the most ancient Christian feasts, Epiphany was first celebrated in the East, where it has been held, almost universally on January 6. Today, among Christians, the feast is known as Theophany—the revelation of God to humanity.
Epiphany is marked by four different events, in the following order of importance (not by the order in which they are purported to occur): the Baptism of the Lord; Jesus’ first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to humanity.
At Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God is heard, declaring that Jesus is God’s Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ's divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ's divinity is revealed to the Gentiles—the other nations of the earth.
Eventually, the celebration of the Nativity was separated out, in the West, into Christmas; and shortly thereafter, Western Christians adopted the Eastern feast of the Epiphany, still celebrating the Baptism, the first miracle, and the visit from the Magi. Thus, Epiphany came to mark the end of Christmastide - the Twelve Days of Christmas - which began with the revelation of Christ at his Birth and ended with the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles at Epiphany.
Over the centuries, the various celebrations were further separated by the West, and now the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday after January 6, and the wedding at Cana is commemorated on the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord.
We will be celebrating the Baptism of Jesus this Sunday at Ascension which follows our celebration of the visit of the Magi last Sunday. It is great opportunity to renew our baptismal vows and be reminded that Christ has been revealed to each and every one of us and we are beloved children of God.

Social Justice Day

Are you eager to promote policies in our society that reflect God’s desire for justice and equity, peace and wholeness but don’t know where to start? Here is the perfect opportunity for you!
Join members of Ascension’s Equity and Justice Committee in attending Social Justice Day on Saturday, January 20, 2024. This event is a joint effort by the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MEPPN), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and the Bishops of the Diocese of Maryland and the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We will gather in the Delaplaine Barn at the Claggett Center, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, to worship and reflect on the Gospel imperatives as they relate to our activity in the public arena. Also, breakout sessions with advocates from around the state will allow us to hear the stories of those impacted directly by the issues that inform our legislative priorities.
This is an in-person and virtual event. Those who wish to attend virtually will be sent a link to join us closer to the event.
Registration opens at 8:00 AM; the event begins at 9:30 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to in-person attendees. There is no cost to attend.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is on January 21 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

This fun annual event will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Come join us to celebrate Mardi Gras, Carnival, Fat Tuesday or Martes Gordo...and it’s a good excuse to have pancakes and sausage! ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 14
We will celebrate the Holy Eucharist and offer the Imposition of Ashes at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. in the main church. The evening service will be bilingual. “Ashes to Go” will be offered again this year for morning commuters at the Shady Grove Metro Station between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. We need volunteers to come and help with prayers and administering the ashes.

La Epifanía y el Bautismo de Jesús
¿Se ha preguntado alguna vez qué celebramos en la Epifanía? Todos los años después del Año Nuevo nos reunimos para celebrar algo que llamamos Epifanía. Después de mi sermón de la semana pasada, cuando hablé de "la estrella", mucha gente hizo comentarios al respecto, pero una persona me pidió que hablara más sobre la Epifanía y su verdadero significado.
La fiesta de la Epifanía de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo es una de las fiestas cristianas más antiguas. Epifanía viene de un verbo griego que significa "revelar", "manifestar". Todos los diversos acontecimientos que celebra la fiesta de la Epifanía son revelaciones de Cristo a la humanidad.
Como muchas de las fiestas cristianas más antiguas, la Epifanía se celebró por primera vez en Oriente, donde se ha celebrado, casi universalmente, el 6 de enero. Hoy, entre los cristianos, la fiesta se conoce como Teofanía, la revelación de Dios a la humanidad.
La Epifanía está marcada por cuatro acontecimientos diferentes, en el siguiente orden de importancia (no por el orden en que supuestamente ocurrieron): el Bautismo del Señor; el primer milagro de Jesús, la transformación del agua en vino en las bodas de Caná; la Natividad de Cristo; y la visita de los Reyes Magos. Cada uno de ellos es una revelación de Dios a la humanidad.
En el Bautismo de Cristo, desciende el Espíritu Santo y se oye la voz de Dios, que declara que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios; en las bodas de Caná, el milagro revela la divinidad de Cristo; en la Natividad, los ángeles dan testimonio de Cristo y los pastores, que representan al pueblo de Israel, se postran ante Él; y en la visita de los Reyes Magos, la divinidad de Cristo se revela a los gentiles, las demás naciones de la tierra.
Con el tiempo, la celebración de la Natividad se separó, en Occidente, en Navidad; y poco después, los cristianos occidentales adoptaron la fiesta oriental de la Epifanía, celebrando todavía el Bautismo, el primer milagro y la visita de los Reyes Magos. De este modo, la Epifanía vino a marcar el final del tiempo navideño -los Doce Días de Navidad- que comenzaba con la revelación de Cristo en su Nacimiento y terminaba con la revelación de Cristo a los gentiles en la Epifanía.
A lo largo de los siglos, las distintas celebraciones fueron separadas aún más por Occidente, y ahora el Bautismo del Señor se celebra el domingo posterior al 6 de enero, y las bodas de Caná se conmemoran el domingo posterior al Bautismo del Señor.
Celebraremos el Bautismo de Jesús este domingo de la Ascensión, que sigue a nuestra celebración de la visita de los Reyes Magos el domingo pasado. Es una gran oportunidad para renovar nuestros votos bautismales y recordar que Cristo se ha revelado a todos y cada uno de nosotros y que somos hijos amados de Dios.

¿Está ansioso por promover políticas en nuestra sociedad que reflejen el deseo de Dios de justicia y equidad, paz y plenitud, pero no sabe por dónde empezar? ¡He aquí la oportunidad perfecta para usted!
Únase a los miembros del Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión para asistir al Día de la Justicia Social el sábado 20 de enero de 2024. Este evento es un esfuerzo conjunto de la Red Episcopal de Política Pública de Maryland (MEPPN), la Comisión de la Verdad y la Reconciliación (TRC) y los obispos de la diócesis de Maryland y del Sínodo de Delaware-Maryland de la Iglesia Evangélica Luterana en América (ELCA). Nos reuniremos en el Granero Delaplaine del Centro Claggett, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, para rendir culto y reflexionar sobre los imperativos del Evangelio en relación con nuestra actividad en el ámbito público. PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. Y por favor, considere la posibilidad de proporcionar suministros, incluso si usted no puede estar allí para ayudar con el embolsado. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD
¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.

Este divertido evento anual tendrá lugar el martes 13 de febrero de 2023 a las 6:30 p.m. en el Salón Parroquial. Venga a celebrar con nosotros el Mardi Gras, Carnaval, Martes Gordo... ¡y es una buena excusa para comer panqueques y salchichas! Este evento necesita muchos ayudantes Y muchos asistentes, "¡cuantos más, mejor!". EL MIERCOLES DE CENIZA ES EL 14 DE FEBRERO
Celebraremos la Santa Eucaristía y ofreceremos la Imposición de la Ceniza a las 12:00 del mediodía y a las 7:00 de la tarde en la iglesia principal. El servicio de la tarde será bilingüe. "Ceniza para llevar" se ofrecerá de nuevo este año para los viajeros matutinos en la estación de metro de Shady Grove entre las 7:00 a.m. y las 9:00 a.m. Necesitamos voluntarios que vengan a ayudar con las oraciones y la administración de la ceniza.
