Diocesan Convention Report 2024
I was privileged to join Elizabeth Baker as one of two of your representatives to the 129th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington held on Saturday, January 27,2024. The Convention was initiated with a Zoom Session, held on Friday the 26th, but regrettably I was not able to participate.
On Saturday, a beautiful worship service was led by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. I would be remiss if I did not share how spiritual an experience it is to participate in a Eucharistic Worship Service led by our Bishop in the National Cathedral. It was my first such experience.
A special guest, James Fawcett, of St. Martin-in-the Fields, in London’s Trafalgar Square, preached the sermon.
To try to summarize the Business of the Convention would require much more room than this one page (The Convention Booklet was 84 pages).
I will just try to touch on some of the highlights.
Using a mobile voting system the following were elected Members to the Standing Committee:

Ms. Iona Harrison (Lay)
Mr. Greg Lebel (Lay)
There were two business sessions, 4 Videos representing examples of the ministries in four congregations. A lot of the Lord’s excellent work is being done in our diocese.
Bishop Mariann’s Address was both inspirational and concrete as she reviewed some of the progress of the Strategic Plan, and Initiatives of the Diocese (https://edow.org/2024/01/31/2024-bishops-convention-address/). Subsequently, other presenters provided more specific details such as Finances, Personnel, a report from the Reparations Committee, Finances (a detailed review of the 2023 Actual and the 2024 Budget). I came away feeling good about the financial status of our diocese.

#1 Ordained Deacon Compensation... which was not really compensation, but an opportunity for parishes to allow deacons, if they chose, to become eligible for the benefits of the Church Group.
#2 Sacred Ground as Anti-Racism Training
#3 Migration with Dignity
#4 Conditioning US Military Aid to Israel
#5 In Solidarity with International Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement (Passed as Amended)
The last three resolutions had lengthy discussions before passage.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is February 18, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. HOSPITALITY ANGELS
Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

2024 PLEDGE PAYMENT
If your 2024 pledge is supposed to be paid via automatic transaction taken out on Realm, please double check that it was actually taken out and that it's shown on your Realm account. We have heard from a few parishioners that their pledge was not taken out.

FLOWER DONATIONS
If you donated toward our Altar flowers - or any flower donations – electronically on Realm, please inform Jesse or Julie in an email of the date and, if needed, the reason for the donation (i.e., in honor / in memory / in thanksgiving for name, or just to the glory of God, etc.) Realm doesn't notify us of flower donations. You can also use an empty flower donation envelope, noting on the outside that payment has been made on Realm.

MIDWEEK SIMPLE SUPPER AND EUCHARISTIC SERVICE
On Thursdays during Lent, we will have a simple shared supper of soup at 6:00 p.m. followed by Holy Eucharist in the main church at 7:00 p.m.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
This fun annual event will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Come join us to celebrate Mardi Gras, Carnival, Fat Tuesday or Martes Gordo...and it’s a good excuse to have pancakes and sausage! This event needs lots of helpers AND lots of attendees, “the more, the merrier!” If you have an instrument you would like to play or if you have a fun activity or games, contact Padre Javier at frjavier@ascensionmd.org

ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 14
We will celebrate the Holy Eucharist and offer the Imposition of Ashes at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. in the main church. The evening service will be bilingual. “Ashes to Go” will be offered again this year for morning commuters at the Shady Grove Metro Station between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. We need volunteers to come and help with prayers and administering the ashes.

Happy New Year! Is exercise or increased movement one of your New Year's resolutions? Weight Loss? Do you want a stronger core? Looking to improve your posture? Reduce back, neck, or shoulder stiffness/pain? Are you looking to cross-train to improve your primary form of exercise?
Pilates is an excellent exercise form that addresses all of the above and can be done by all ages.
Join us at 6-7pm on 1/22; 1/29; 2/5; and/or 2/12 for mat Pilates class in Parish Hall with Marcia, IM=X certified Pilates instructor. No previous experience necessary. All levels of fitness welcome. FUNDRAISING TEAM
Hi everyone, I’m Toni Babcock and have been associated with Ascension since 1991. I’ve been on the vestry, did Sunday School, Youth Group, Greeter, and oversaw the kitchen and supplies for many years. I have worshiped virtually for some time, and I feel it’s a good time to come back in person.
Folks indicated at the Annual Meeting that we should do some fundraising for the Church.
We have a great community here and maybe we can do some fundraising of some type. If you are interested, please give me a call this week so we can set up a time and place to all meet in person and brainstorm option and see if we can get something going.

Informe de la Convención Diocesana 2024
Tuve el privilegio de unirme a Elizabeth Baker como una de sus dos representantes en la 129ª Convención Anual de la Diócesis Episcopal de Washington celebrada el sábado 27 de enero de 2024. La Convención se inició con una Sesión Zoom, celebrada el viernes 26, pero lamentablemente no pude participar.
El sábado, un hermoso servicio de adoración fue dirigido por la Reverenda Obispa Mariann Edgar Budde. Sería negligente por mi parte si no compartiera lo espiritual que es la experiencia de participar en un Servicio de Eucaristía dirigido por nuestra Obispa en la Catedral Nacional. Fue mi primera experiencia de este tipo.
Un invitado especial, James Fawcett, de St. Martin-in-the Fields, en la plaza Trafalgar de Londres, predicó el sermón.
Intentar resumir los asuntos de la Convención requeriría mucho más espacio que esta única página (el folleto de la Convención tenía 84 páginas).
Sólo trataré de mencionar algunos de los puntos más destacados.

El discurso de la Obispa Mariann fue a la vez inspirador y concreto al repasar algunos de los progresos del Plan Estratégico, y de las Iniciativas de la Diócesis (https://edow.org/2024/01/31/2024-bishops-convention-address/). Posteriormente, otros presentadores ofrecieron detalles más específicos como las Finanzas, el Personal, un informe del Comité de Reparaciones, las Finanzas (una revisión detallada del Real 2023 y del Presupuesto 2024). Salí sintiéndome bien sobre el estado financiero de nuestra diócesis.

#1 Compensación para Diáconos Ordenados... que no era realmente una compensación, sino una oportunidad para que las parroquias permitieran a los diáconos, si así lo decidían, ser elegibles para los beneficios del Grupo de Iglesia.

#3 Migración con dignidad
#4 Condicionar la ayuda militar de EE.UU. a Israel
#5 En Solidaridad con el Movimiento Internacional Palestino de Boicot, Desinversión y Sanciones (Aprobada en su forma enmendada)
Las tres últimas resoluciones tuvieron largas discusiones antes de su aprobación.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres proporciona almuerzos en bolsas a los hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se reúnen en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Los generosos miembros de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proporcionamos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD
¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.

CENA DE PANQUEQUES DEL MARTES DE CARNAVAL
Este divertido evento anual tendrá lugar el martes 13 de febrero de 2023 a las 6:30 p.m. en el Salón Parroquial. Venga a celebrar con nosotros el Mardi Gras, Carnaval, Martes Gordo... ¡y es una buena excusa para comer panqueques y salchichas! Este evento necesita muchos ayudantes Y muchos asistentes, "¡cuantos más, mejor!". EL MIERCOLES DE CENIZA ES EL 14 DE FEBRERO
Celebraremos la Santa Eucaristía y ofreceremos la Imposición de la Ceniza a las 12:00 del mediodía y a las 7:00 de la tarde en la iglesia principal. El servicio de la tarde será bilingüe. "Ceniza para llevar" se ofrecerá de nuevo este año para los viajeros matutinos en la estación de metro de Shady Grove entre las 7:00 a.m. y las 9:00 a.m. Necesitamos voluntarios que vengan a ayudar con las oraciones y la administración de la ceniza.

ÚNASE A NOSOTROS PARA UNA CLASE DE EJERCICIO GRATUITA
¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ¿Es el ejercicio o el aumento del movimiento uno de sus propósitos de Año Nuevo? ¿Perder peso? ¿Quiere un núcleo más fuerte? ¿Busca mejorar su postura? ¿Reducir la rigidez/dolor de espalda, cuello u hombros? ¿Busca un entrenamiento cruzado para mejorar su forma principal de ejercicio?
Pilates es una excelente forma de ejercicio que aborda todo lo anterior y puede ser realizado por todas las edades.

EQUIPO DE RECAUDACIÓN DE FONDOS
Hola a todos, soy Toni Babcock y he estado asociada con la Ascensión desde 1991. He estado en la sacristía, hice la Escuela Dominical, el Grupo Juvenil, Greeter, y supervisé la cocina y los suministros durante muchos años. He rendido culto virtualmente durante algún tiempo, y siento que es un buen momento para volver en persona.
La gente indicó en la Reunión Anual que deberíamos hacer alguna recaudación de fondos para la Iglesia.
Tenemos una gran comunidad aquí y quizá podamos hacer algún tipo de recaudación de fondos. Si está interesado, por favor llámeme esta semana para que podamos fijar una hora y un lugar para reunirnos todos en persona y pensar en alguna opción y ver si podemos poner algo en marcha.
