DID YOU KNOW that the Maryland legislature is in session now? A lot of important legislation is being considered. Would you like to learn more?        

The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MEPPN) have resources to help you learn about specific proposed bills and let you contact your representatives to express your opinion. Here is the link to their site: https://episcopalmaryland.org/advocacy/.

The Ascension Equity & Justice Committee has been studying and tracking proposed bills and is paying particular attention to these five (the first two are supported by the MEPPN) :

·      SB [Senate Bill] 388 and HB [House Bill] 340: Prescription Drug Affordability Board—Authority for Upper Payment Limits and Funding (Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for All Marylanders Act of 2024). This bill would allow upper limits to be set on prescription drug prices for all health insurance plans in Maryland, not just the plans for state and local employees.

·      SB 705 and HB 728: Health Insurance—Qualified Resident Enrollment Program (Access to Care Act). This bill would allow all Marylanders, including undocumented residents who work and pay taxes, to purchase health insurance through the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange.  

·      HB 864: Empower Maryland Energy Efficiency Act of 2024. This bill includes expansions to the EmPOWER program to meet the needs of low-income users.

·      SB 475 and HB 583: Center for Firearm Violence Prevention—Establishment. This bill would establish the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention in the Maryland Department of Health to reduce firearm violence, harm from firearm violence, and misuse of firearms in the State.

·      SB 488 and HB 947: An Act concerning Civil Actions—Public Nuisances—Firearm Industry Members (Gun Industry Accountability Act of 2024). This bill would prohibit certain firearm industry members from knowingly creating, maintaining, or contributing to harm to the public through the sale, manufacture, importation, or marketing of a firearm–related product under certain circumstances.

Ascension’s Excursion to the

National Portrait Gallery

Saturday, March 9, at 11:30 a.m.

Ascension’s Equity & Justice Committee invites everyone to an excursion to the National Portrait Gallery, Eighth and G Streets NW, Washington DC, on Saturday, March 9, at 11:30 a.m. We will view Isaac Julien: Lessons of the Hour—Frederick Douglass and exhibits on leaders in environmental and social justice. Lessons of the Hour is a moving image installation that interweaves period reenactments across five screens to create a picture of the life of Frederick Douglass, 19^th-century activist, writer, orator, and philosopher.

View the annual orchid exhibition of 350 orchids, along with contemporary artworks, in the museum’s Kogod Courtyard, where we will meet for lunch (optional). Children are welcome! Join us at 6:00-7:00 p.m. on 2/19; 2/26; 3/4; and/or 3/11 for mat Pilates class in Parish Hall with Marcia, IM=X certified Pilates instructor. No previous experience necessary. All levels of fitness welcome. Just bring a towel, wear exercise clothes, and we will take care of the rest. Pilates is an excellent exercise form that addresses strengthening your core, improving posture, reducing back, neck, and shoulder stiffness/pain. Remember we have Youth Group today from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the undercroft. We will finalize the stations of the cross but will have lots of time for fun games and dinner. Can’t wait to see everyone then!

Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers. La Diócesis Episcopal de Maryland y la Red Episcopal de Política Pública de Maryland (MEPPN) disponen de recursos que le ayudarán a informarse sobre proyectos de ley específicos y le permitirán ponerse en contacto con sus representantes para expresar su opinión. El Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión ha estado estudiando y haciendo un seguimiento de los proyectos de ley propuestos y está prestando especial atención a estos cinco (los dos primeros cuentan con el apoyo de la MEPPN) :

Este proyecto de ley permitiría a todos los habitantes de Maryland, incluidos los residentes indocumentados que trabajan y pagan impuestos, adquirir un seguro médico a través del Intercambio de prestaciones sanitarias de Maryland.  

- HB 864: Ley de Eficiencia Energética de Maryland de 2024. Este proyecto de ley incluye ampliaciones del programa EmPOWER para satisfacer las necesidades de los usuarios con bajos ingresos. 

- SB 475 y HB 583: Centro para la Prevención de la Violencia con Armas de Fuego-Establecimiento. - SB 488 y HB 947: Ley sobre Acciones Civiles-Molestias Públicas-Miembros de la Industria de las Armas de Fuego (Ley de Responsabilidad de la Industria de las Armas de 2024). Este proyecto de ley prohibiría a determinados miembros de la industria de las armas de fuego crear, mantener o contribuir a sabiendas a causar daños al público mediante la venta, fabricación, importación o comercialización de un producto relacionado con las armas de fuego en determinadas circunstancias.

Excursión de Ascensión a la

Galería Nacional de Retratos

Sábado, 9 de marzo, a las 11:30 a.m.

El Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión invita a todos a una excursión a la Galería Nacional de Retratos, en las calles Octava y G del NW, Washington DC, el sábado 9 de marzo a las 11:30 h. Veremos Isaac Julien: Lessons of the Hour-Frederick Douglass y exposiciones sobre líderes de la justicia medioambiental y social. Lecciones de la hora es una instalación de imágenes en movimiento que entrelaza recreaciones de época a través de cinco pantallas para crear una imagen de la vida de Frederick Douglass, activista, escritor, orador y filósofo del siglo XIX. 

Contemple la exposición anual de 350 orquídeas, junto con obras de arte contemporáneo, en el Patio Kogod del museo, donde nos reuniremos para almorzar (opcional). Los niños son bienvenidos. Pilates es una excelente forma de ejercicio que se ocupa de fortalecer su núcleo, mejorar la postura, reducir la espalda, el cuello y la rigidez / dolor en los hombros. También es estupendo como entrenamiento cruzado para mejorar su forma principal de ejercicio y lo pueden hacer personas de todas las edades. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD

¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.
