New Years Eve, 2023
Over the years I have celebrated New Year’s Eve with friends and family by dining out or partying at home, playing duets with my elderly mother, or just going to bed early. For the turn of the millennium I was with my husband and sons in a hotel room in Missoula, Montana. All 4 of us were laid low by a virus in the family bonding experience of illness. From our sickbeds we watched on TV as each time zone around the world in turn celebrated the arrival of 2000.
Memorable also are my Colorado Springs childhood memories of the midnight fireworks from the top of Pikes Peak on Dec. 31. The road up the Peak would be closed by snow at that point in the year, so the only way to get up there was the snowy trail. Members of the exclusive AdAmAn Club would hike to the top of the mountain on New Year’s Eve day and set off the fireworks display at 12:00. Eagerly we would bundle up to wait out in the cold for the coming of midnight to see the mountain erupt with Joy. One year a tiny cloud appeared at 11:50 and settled over the summit in an otherwise cloudless sky. We could not see the spectacle at midnight, and tried to imagine that the cloud glowed from time to time - but it didn’t. We knew something exciting was happening, but we could not see it.
So, one way or another, we wait for the moment of transition to come. As it flits by, we may see a glimpse of something, or nothing at all. Things change. Another chapter begins. Maybe we take stock of what is and aspire to what we imagine would be better. As individuals and as a community, we draw a line in the Sands of Time to say, “That was Then, and this is Now.” Prayerfully, with God’s help, let us all move forward in faith and hope into 2024 to love and serve God and one another.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is on January 21 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. DO YOU GIVE ONLINE?
We have something new for those who use electronic means to make their contributions to Ascension. Starting on Sunday, October 22, the welcomers have cards available to hand out with the bulletin, which you can take with you to your seat. You will place the card in the offering plate when it comes around. This maintains the symbolism of giving during the service and having your gift presented at the altar. The cards have information on them as to how to give online, together with a QR code that takes you to the donations page, so that if you forgot to make your gift, you have one last chance before the service starts.

HOSPITALITY ANGELS
Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

YOUTH GROUP FUN OUTING! JAN 7TH AT 6 PM @ SKYZONE!!

Ascension Youth will gather for fun and food in celebration of the season on January 7th at 6 pm at SkyZone in Gaithersburg.

- We will jump for one hour and then have dinner together. So plan on 6 pm drop off and 8:15 pm pick up. While the cost is $20 per youth, we have scholarships for anyone unable to pay. All are welcome including older students home for break! I will need a final head count of “jumpers” by Friday Jan 5.

Víspera de Año Nuevo, 2023
A lo largo de los años he celebrado la víspera de Año Nuevo con amigos y familiares cenando fuera o de fiesta en casa, tocando a dúo con mi anciana madre o simplemente acostándome temprano. Para el cambio de milenio estaba con mi esposo y mis hijos en una habitación de hotel en Missoula, Montana. Los 4 estábamos postrados por un virus en la experiencia de unión familiar de la enfermedad. Desde nuestras camas de enfermos veíamos por televisión cómo cada zona horaria del mundo celebraba a su vez la llegada del año 2000.
También son memorables los recuerdos de mi infancia en Colorado Springs de los fuegos artificiales de medianoche desde la cima del Pikes Peak el 31 de diciembre. La carretera que sube al Peak estaba cerrada por la nieve en ese momento del año, así que la única forma de subir era por el sendero nevado. Los miembros del exclusivo Club AdAmAn irían de excursión a la cima de la montaña el día de Nochevieja y a las 12:00 encenderían los fuegos artificiales. Ansiosos, nos abrigábamos para esperar en el frío la llegada de la medianoche y ver cómo la montaña estallaba de alegría. Un año una pequeña nube apareció a las 11:50 y se posó sobre la cumbre en un cielo por lo demás despejado. No pudimos ver el espectáculo a medianoche e intentamos imaginar que la nube brillaba de vez en cuando, pero no fue así. Sabíamos que algo emocionante estaba ocurriendo, pero no podíamos verlo.
Así que, de un modo u otro, esperamos a que llegue el momento de la transición. Mientras pasa, puede que veamos un atisbo de algo, o nada en absoluto. Las cosas cambian. Comienza otro capítulo. Puede que hagamos balance de lo que es y aspiremos a lo que imaginamos que sería mejor. Como individuos y como comunidad, trazamos una línea en las arenas del tiempo para decir: "Aquello fue entonces, y esto es ahora". En oración, con la ayuda de Dios, avancemos todos con fe y esperanza hacia 2024 para amar y servir a Dios y a los demás.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados.
