CHRISTMAS IN VIETNAM

I did not want to go to Vietnam, so I joined the U.S. Navy in 1966. After tours on a destroyer escort that tracked Soviet submarines up and down the East Coast, I eventually received new orders. I was to report to Little Creek, Virginia, at the Navy base there. I was to go through a very intense survival course before being sent to Danang, Vietnam. After survival school I was on my long flight to Vietnam.

I arrived in Danang on September 9th, 1968, was assigned to an ammo dump about ten miles away near China Beach. Our duty was to unload ammo coming in from ships and load them onto trucks that were going to the Marines and Army units that were deep in the jungle.

I thought this was going to be an easy tour. How naive I was. We were hit every night by bombs and sniper fire. This went on up until Christmas Eve, 1968. A U.S. Navy chaplain (who happened to be an Episcopal priest) made it to our area to hold a Christmas Eve service in between the bombings. He was a brave guy, standing up behind a makeshift altar (the hood of a Jeep). His sermon was simple and direct. He said I know you can’t imagine that in this Hell hole (his words, but we all agreed with him) you can find love and compassion among the killing and destruction. He also said to keep your faith in God, even though it will be difficult in this situation. It will be hard, but you can find a way to do this.

I thought - how could this be possible? The next day was Christmas Day. There was a break in the bombings so a few of us got in our company Jeep and drove over to the Navy Hospital a few miles down the road to see a few of our buddies who were wounded by the shrapnel and bombs. This is where I found the love and compassion and faith the chaplain was talking about. The doctors, and especially the nurses, showed so much love and compassion to these wounded men.

They laughed with them, cried with them, held their hands, and prayed with them until they died. They treated all of them like they were their kids or husbands or boyfriends, no matter what race they were, what rank they were. To them they were human beings in need.

Yes, I have to tell you, my buddies and I cried, seeing all of this. I will never forget the prayers, the compassion, and the love of these wonderful doctors and nurses. Yes, the chaplain was right. You can find love and compassion and your faith in God and yourself and others even in the worst situations. That was my Christmas of 1968 -- one I will never forget.

I hope we can all find this love, compassion, and faith this Christmas 2023.

Are you eager to promote policies in our society that reflect God’s desire for justice and equity, peace and wholeness but don’t know where to start? Here is the perfect opportunity for you!

Join members of Ascension’s Equity and Justice Committee in attending

Social Justice Day on Saturday, January 20, 2024. This event is a joint effort by the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MEPPN), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and the Bishops of the Diocese of Maryland and the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We will gather in the Delaplaine Barn at the Claggett Center, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, to worship and reflect on the Gospel imperatives as they relate to our activity in the public arena. Also, breakout sessions with advocates from around the state will allow us to hear the stories of those impacted directly by the issues that inform our legislative priorities.

This is an in-person and virtual event. Those who wish to attend virtually will be sent a link to join us closer to the event.

Registration opens at 8:00 a.m.; the event begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:00 p.m.. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to in-person attendees. There is no cost to attend.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is today, January 21 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. DO YOU GIVE ONLINE?

We have something new for those who use electronic means to make their contributions to Ascension. Starting on Sunday, October 22, the welcomers have cards available to hand out with the bulletin, which you can take with you to your seat. You will place the card in the offering plate when it comes around. This maintains the symbolism of giving during the service and having your gift presented at the altar. The cards have information on them as to how to give online, together with a QR code that takes you to the donations page, so that if you forgot to make your gift, you have one last chance before the service starts.

HOSPITALITY ANGELS

Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

NAVIDAD EN VIETNAM

No quería ir a Vietnam, así que me alisté en la Marina estadounidense en 1966. Después de realizar misiones en una escolta de destructores que rastreaba submarinos soviéticos arriba y abajo de la costa este, acabé recibiendo nuevas órdenes. Debía presentarme en Little Creek, Virginia, en la base de la Marina que había allí. Debía pasar por un curso de supervivencia muy intenso antes de ser enviado a Danang, Vietnam. Después de la escuela de supervivencia emprendí mi largo vuelo a Vietnam.

Llegué a Danang el 9 de septiembre de 1968, me asignaron a un depósito de municiones a unos quince kilómetros, cerca de China Beach. Nuestro deber era descargar las municiones que llegaban de los barcos y cargarlas en camiones que iban a las unidades de los Marines y del Ejército que estaban en lo profundo de la jungla.

Pensé que iba a ser una misión fácil. Qué ingenuo fui. Todas las noches nos alcanzaban bombas y disparos de francotiradores. Esto duró hasta la Nochebuena de 1968. Un capellán de la Marina estadounidense (que resultó ser un sacerdote episcopal) llegó a nuestra zona para celebrar un servicio de Nochebuena entre los bombardeos. Era un tipo valiente, de pie detrás de un altar improvisado (el capó de un Jeep). Su sermón fue sencillo y directo. Dijo Sé que no pueden imaginar que en este agujero infernal (palabras suyas, pero todos estábamos de acuerdo con él) se pueda encontrar amor y compasión entre la matanza y la destrucción. También dijo que mantuvieran su fe en Dios, aunque será difícil en esta situación. Será duro, pero puedes encontrar la manera de hacerlo.

Pensé: ¿cómo puede ser posible? Al día siguiente era Navidad. Hubo una pausa en los bombardeos, así que algunos de nosotros nos subimos al jeep de la compañía y nos dirigimos al hospital de la Marina, a unos kilómetros de allí, para ver a algunos de nuestros compañeros heridos por la metralla y las bombas. Aquí es donde encontré el amor, la compasión y la fe de los que hablaba el capellán. Los médicos, y especialmente las enfermeras, mostraron tanto amor y compasión a estos hombres heridos.

Se rieron con ellos, lloraron con ellos, les cogieron las manos y rezaron con ellos hasta que murieron. Los trataron a todos como si fueran sus hijos, maridos o novios, sin importarles la raza ni el rango que tuvieran. Para ellos eran seres humanos necesitados.

Sí, tengo que decirle que mis compañeros y yo lloramos al ver todo esto. Nunca olvidaré las oraciones, la compasión y el amor de estos maravillosos médicos y enfermeras. Sí, el capellán tenía razón. Puedes encontrar amor y compasión y tu fe en Dios y en ti mismo y en los demás incluso en las peores situaciones. Ésa fue mi Navidad de 1968, una que nunca olvidaré.

Espero que todos podamos encontrar este amor, compasión y fe en esta Navidad de 2023.

¿Está ansioso por promover políticas en nuestra sociedad que reflejen el deseo de Dios de justicia y equidad, paz y plenitud, pero no sabe por dónde empezar? ¡He aquí la oportunidad perfecta para usted!

Únase a los miembros del Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión para asistir al

Día de la Justicia Social el sábado 20 de enero de 2024. Este evento es un esfuerzo conjunto de la Red Episcopal de Política Pública de Maryland (MEPPN), la Comisión de la Verdad y la Reconciliación (TRC) y los obispos de la diócesis de Maryland y del Sínodo de Delaware-Maryland de la Iglesia Evangélica Luterana en América (ELCA). Nos reuniremos en el Granero Delaplaine del Centro Claggett, 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, Maryland, para rendir culto y reflexionar sobre los imperativos del Evangelio en relación con nuestra actividad en el ámbito público. Tenemos algo nuevo para aquellos que utilizan medios electrónicos para hacer sus contribuciones a la Ascensión. Comenzando el domingo 22 de octubre, los encargados de dar la bienvenida tienen tarjetas disponibles para repartir con el boletín, que puede llevar con usted a su asiento. Usted colocará la tarjeta en el plato de ofrendas cuando llegue el momento. Esto mantiene el simbolismo de dar durante el servicio y tener su regalo presentado en el altar. Las tarjetas contienen información sobre cómo ofrendar en línea, junto con un código QR que le llevará a la página de donaciones, de modo que si usted se olvidó de hacer su regalo, usted tiene una última oportunidad antes de que comience el servicio.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES

El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. Y por favor, considere la posibilidad de proporcionar suministros, incluso si usted no puede estar allí para ayudar con el embolsado. A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.
