WHAT DO THE FOUR CANDLES OF ADVENT SYMBOLIZE?
During Advent and Christmas, festively decorated evergreen wreaths hang in windows and on doors everywhere. In many homes and churches, it’s also common to see special wreaths lying on tables or ledges, adorned with four candles (either four blue, as we use at Ascension, or three purple and one pink). This familiar symbol of the season is the Advent wreath.
Traditionally, the Advent wreath is a circle of evergreen branches. It is often decorated with berries and pinecones. Both the evergreen branches and the circular shape symbolize the passing of time and eternal life. The shape of the wreath, with no beginning or end, reflects the complete and endless love that Jesus has for us. During the Advent season, we eagerly anticipate his coming and the promise of eternal life in heaven with him.
The Four Advent Candles
As a Christian tradition, the wreath holds the four Advent candles. The candles represent Jesus coming as the light in darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit. As Christmas draws nearer, each candle brings a little more light into the darkness. A white candle is in the center of the wreath; it is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to symbolize that Jesus is with us and is called the Christ candle). Each of the candles lit before Christmas represent an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent.
The First Week of Advent: December 3, 2023
This is called the prophecy candle, and it represents hope. It symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent we remember the Old Testament prophets who foretold of Jesus’ coming with hope and anticipation.
The Second Week of Advent: December 10, 2023
This candle’s name is the Bethlehem candle, and it represents Peace and Preparation
During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-versions-of-ourselves in preparation for Jesus’ coming. We remember the journey Joseph and Mary took from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
The Third Week of Advent: December 17, 2023
The third candle is the shepherd's candle, and it represents joy. During the third week of Advent we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day. This Sunday we remember the joy the shepherd's felt at the birth of Jesus.
The Fourth Week of Advent: December 24, 2023
This candle is called the angel’s candle, and it represents love. During this final week of Advent we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son. We reflect on the good news of God's love brought to us from the angel Gabriel.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is today, December 17 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. DO YOU GIVE ONLINE?
We have something new for those who use electronic means to make their contributions to Ascension. Starting on Sunday, October 22, the welcomers have cards available to hand out with the bulletin, which you can take with you to your seat. You will place the card in the offering plate when it comes around. This maintains the symbolism of giving during the service and having your gift presented at the altar. The cards have information on them as to how to give online, together with a QR code that takes you to the donations page, so that if you forgot to make your gift, you have one last chance before the service starts.

HOSPITALITY ANGELS
Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers.

Advent is a time of waiting and reflection. Waiting in anticipation of the coming of the Christ child and reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas.
It is a time to let go of some of the earthly cares and demands that divert our attention from this important season in the Christian calendar.

LAS POSADAS
The celebration, also known as posada (Spanish for inn or lodging), is a religious festival celebrated in Mexico that commemorates the journey Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe place to stay where Mary could give birth to Jesus. The tradition is celebrated over multiple days between Dec. 16 and Christmas Eve, and features a procession of carolers as well as food and warm drinks and piñatas. Join us Saturday, December 23, 2023, at 3:00 p.m.; bring food to share.

¿QUÉ SIMBOLIZAN LAS CUATRO VELAS DE ADVIENTO?
Durante el Adviento y la Navidad, en todas partes cuelgan coronas de hojas perennes decoradas festivamente en ventanas y puertas. En muchos hogares e iglesias, también es habitual ver coronas especiales sobre mesas o repisas, adornadas con cuatro velas (cuatro azules, como las que utilizamos en la Ascensión, o tres moradas y una rosa). Este símbolo familiar de la temporada es la corona de Adviento.
Tradicionalmente, la corona de Adviento es un círculo de ramas de hoja perenne. A menudo se decora con bayas y piñas. Tanto las ramas de hoja perenne como la forma circular simbolizan el paso del tiempo y la vida eterna. La forma de la corona, sin principio ni fin, refleja el amor completo e interminable que Jesús nos tiene. Durante el tiempo de Adviento, esperamos con impaciencia su venida y la promesa de la vida eterna en el cielo con él.
Las cuatro velas de Adviento
Como tradición cristiana, la corona sostiene las cuatro velas de Adviento. Las velas representan la venida de Jesús como luz en la oscuridad. Cada domingo se enciende una vela hasta que se encienden las cuatro. A medida que se acerca la Navidad, cada vela aporta un poco más de luz en la oscuridad. Una vela blanca está en el centro de la corona; se enciende en Nochebuena o en Navidad para simbolizar que Jesús está con nosotros y se llama la vela de Cristo). Cada una de las velas encendidas antes de Navidad representa un aspecto de la preparación durante el tiempo de Adviento.

Se llama la vela de la profecía y representa la esperanza. Simboliza la penitencia, la preparación y el sacrificio. Durante la primera semana de Adviento recordamos a los profetas del Antiguo Testamento que predijeron la venida de Jesús con esperanza y anticipación.

El nombre de esta vela es la vela de Belén, y representa la Paz y la Preparación
Durante esta segunda semana de Adviento, reflexionamos sobre nuestras vidas y trabajamos para convertirnos en mejores versiones de nosotros mismos como preparación para la venida de Jesús. Recordamos el viaje que hicieron José y María desde Nazaret hasta Belén.

La tercera vela es la vela del pastor y representa la alegría. Durante la tercera semana de Adviento nos llenamos de alegría por la próxima llegada de Jesús el día de Navidad. Este domingo recordamos la alegría que sintieron los pastores por el nacimiento de Jesús.

Esta vela se llama la vela del ángel y representa el amor. Durante esta última semana de Adviento nos regocijamos en el amor infinito que Dios nos tiene, que se hace patente en el nacimiento de su Hijo. Reflexionamos sobre la buena nueva del amor de Dios que nos trajo el ángel Gabriel.

¿DONAS POR INTERNET?
Tenemos algo nuevo para aquellos que utilizan medios electrónicos para hacer sus contribuciones a la Ascensión. Comenzando el domingo 22 de octubre, los encargados de dar la bienvenida tienen tarjetas disponibles para repartir con el boletín, que puede llevar con usted a su asiento. Usted colocará la tarjeta en el plato de ofrendas cuando llegue el momento. Esto mantiene el simbolismo de dar durante el servicio y tener su regalo presentado en el altar. Las tarjetas contienen información sobre cómo ofrendar en línea, junto con un código QR que le llevará a la página de donaciones, de modo que si usted se olvidó de hacer su regalo, usted tiene una última oportunidad antes de que comience el servicio.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres es el 17 de diciembre a las 9:00 a.m. El Programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se arman en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. Y por favor, considere la posibilidad de proporcionar suministros, incluso si usted no puede estar allí para ayudar con el embolsado. ÁNGELES DE LA HOSPITALIDAD
¿Has echado de menos la Hora del Café como solía ser? ¿Los deliciosos aperitivos? ¿Reunirse, saludar y conocer gente nueva mientras saborea su café? ¿Te gusta hornear/cocinar o simplemente comprar algo para compartir? A nosotros también. Ayúdenos a traer de vuelta "los viejos tiempos" de la Hora del Café uniéndose a nosotros en la reorganización y la reactivación de los Ángeles de la Hospitalidad en la prestación de aperitivos sobre una base regular todos los domingos. Estamos buscando voluntarios dedicados para formar equipos de 2-3 miembros para servir al menos un domingo cada mes, en traer bocadillos y preparar café, si podemos conseguir suficientes voluntarios.

REFLEXIONES DE ADVIENTO
El Adviento es un tiempo de espera y reflexión. Esperar anticipando la venida del Niño Jesús y reflexionar sobre el verdadero significado de la Navidad.
