Intermediate Hebrew Next Week!
|
After a long hiatus due to COVID, our Intermediate Hebrew class is back this summer!
Would you like to be able to understand the prayers we say at Shabbat services or translate the Torah into English? As long as you already know how to read the Hebrew alphabet (both vowels and consonants), then you are ready for our Intermediate Hebrew class.
The class will be every Tuesday evening from 7 pm to 8:30 pm (Eastern Time) between July 11 and August 29. This year it will be taught both in person at Or Ami and over Zoom (for those traveling or living in other locations).
The cost is only $50 for non-members and further discounted to just $36 for Or Ami members, including your textbook.
Register HERE by July 4. You can also see this page for more details.

Hope to see you in the class this year!
Welcome Our Rabbinic Intern, Jules Ilian!
|
Or Ami is excited to welcome our rabbinic intern, Jules Ilian, this summer. Jules Ilian (she/they) is a rising second year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). A native New Yorker, she just finished her first year in Jerusalem and will be studying at the New York campus of HUC-JIR in the fall. While in Israel, Jules served as a Social Change Fellow with the New Israel Fund. Jules is passionate about social justice, education, and making Jewish rituals meaningful.
Jules grew up going to Jewish summer camps and later worked at Kutz, the Union of Reform Judaism’s teen leadership camp, as a counselor for campers on the Autism Spectrum and later as a program coordinator. Jules graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts in Women and Gender Studies. At the University of Delaware (UD), Jules was very active with UD Hillel, where they served as president and treasurer of the Reform Jewish club Kesher, president of the social justice club Project Change, and a Birthright Israel intern. She also met her husband, Alex Zissman, through Hillel at the University of Delaware.
| |
Between college and rabbinical school, Jules moved to Pittsburgh and worked as a Jewish educator for the Joint Jewish Education Program. In their free time, Jules enjoys travel, meeting new people, and reading. Jules looks forward to getting to know the community at Or Ami and working together with Rabbi Ahuva this summer.

The "Connected Kids" playgroup for neurodivergent kids started Saturday, June 17, from 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. It will continue weekly through Saturday, July 22.
“Neurodivergent” describes individuals whose neurological development and functioning differs from what is considered typical. It encompasses a range of neurological conditions, including autism, ADHD, and other developmental differences.
The group will be led by an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, and a licensed clinical social worker, all of whom will use a mix of structured and unstructured play activities to help children develop and practice social, communication, and emotional regulation skills. Two therapists will guide the children's activities while the third will gather with parents in a separate space. Parent education topics include: understanding neurodivergence, promoting positive parent-child relationships, parenting strategies for neurodivergent children, stress management and self-care, and just about anything else that comes up!
| |
The curriculum is aimed at children ages 5-7, but slightly younger or older children are welcome as well. Leaders prefer that families attend all six sessions but understand that summer vacation plans have already been made, so it is okay to miss a week or two. There is room for 8 children total. To see if spaces are still available and to reserve a spot now, click HERE.
