Club Meeting This Thursday!
|
|
Thank you to everyone who sent well-wishes and condolences on the passing of my grandmother.
Last weekend, I traveled back to New York for her funeral. In an otherwise dreary, emotional time for me, the silver lining was having the opportunity to meet
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
.
She is the real deal.
At a local town hall meeting, I watched her break down complex housing and tax policies in two languages to a mostly politically-unengaged community.

|
A year ago, Alexandria was serving drinks in a bar. This November, she'll be representing the congressional district I was born in.
The South Bronx is worlds-away from San Diego.
It's where my grandmother migrated to from Puerto Rico amidst a World War with the promise of opportunity.
It's where my grandparents raised their family.
41 years ago, my grandmother moved into the building she lived in until the day she died -- in “the projects” run by the New York City Housing Authority. It was here where she raised two generations. She was a young, woman of color who had dropped out of elementary school to provide for her very poor family. She would never graduate from high school, or any educational institution.
My grandmother was not a community leader. She was not a politician. She was uneducated. She did not serve her country in a time of war nor did she work in a sexy career; and yet, she was a fierce, street smart, independent woman who managed the family business, and raised three strong Puerto Rican children. Her sacrifice was heroic. Her grace and strength in the face of immense struggle was inspiring. She was unyielding to the odds and obstacles stacked against her.
It's a part of our world where your zip code determines your destiny.
The fact that Alexandria is going to represent the South Bronx in Congress is inspiring. It's as every bit improbable as it is the classic American success story.
Don't kid yourself -- she worked hard, and earned her place in history. So did my grandmother.
Finally, a friendly reminder about our
next club meeting THIS Thursday, August 16th
. We'll be meeting at 7:00pm inside the Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest.
We will be considering endorsements for the following races:
- Encinitas City Council, District 4
- Imperial Beach Mayor
- Imperial Beach City Council
- La Mesa City Council
- National City Mayor
- National City City Council
- Oceanside City Council, District 1

LGBTQ+ SD Exhibition Volunteer Opportunities
|
|
As some of you may know, t
he
San Diego History Center
in partnership with
Lambda Archives
has brought the first exhibition EVER in Balboa Park, focused on San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community. The exhibition will run through January 2020.
Alison Hendrickson, the Visitor & Volunteer Engagement Manager at the San Diego History Center, has reached out and offered some volunteer opportunities.
They are looking for monitors for the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Here’s the role’s description:
H
onor the Quilt at The LGBTQ+ Exhibit at the San Diego History Center. As part of the LGBTQ+ SD exhibit at the San Diego History Center a 12x12 section of the AIDS quilt is on display. The individual panels are significant to San Diego and remember Jess Jessop, Brad Truax, Gary Rees, Diversionary Theater, Monte Kobey, Philip Dimitri Galas, David Mandell Jr. and Tim Pour.
As part of the arrangement with The Names Project to display these quilts, the section is required to have a person to stay by and be present while the section is on display during the time the History Center is open to the public. Engaging with visitors in the gallery space is encouraged. Shifts available daily from 10:00am - 1:30pm and 1:30-5:00pm. If you're interested, e-mail Alison at
ahendrickson@sandiegohistory.org
In addition, they are recruiting docents to lead guided group tours of the exhibition. A tour script and training will be provided. Tour schedule is on-call. If you're interested, e-mail Alison at the e-mail above.

The Club depends on membership dues to keep the lights on and promote our candidates and issues to the community. A large number of community members depend on our
Voters Guide
to help them make an intelligent choice when marking their ballots so your membership renewal is critical to ensure those Guides get into those hands. At the risk of sounding like a Public Television pledge drive, if you depend on our endorsements, Voters Guide, newsletters, social media posts and programs,
you should be a member!

|
If your membership has lapsed or if you want to renew your membership, please re-up now. You might also consider upgrading your membership to a higher level.
You can find out more about the Club's membership levels and benefits online here.
If you would prefer to use a check, please make it out to
