Spirit Journeys: Walking with Resilience, Wellbeing and Respect

On view until late April 2023

This micro-exhibition, Spirit Journeys: Walking with Resilience, Wellbeing and Respect, provides an opportunity for the YVR Art Foundation (YVRAF) 2021 Emerging and Mid-Career Artist Scholarship recipients to exhibit their artworks. Through the YVR Art Foundation Scholarship Program these artists continued their studies or worked with mentors to expand their personal knowledge of Indigenous art and design. The results are breathtaking and inspiring. MOV is honored to showcase the work of these ten talented artists, and we raise our hands in respect and appreciation for those who have inspired and taught them.

Artist Feature...

Sydney Pickering

I am from the Lil’wat Nation and currently live in Vancouver, BC. For my Emerging Artist Scholarship, I continued my ongoing mentorship with Mara Cur to practice hide tanning and created a short film titled Distance with an accompanying hide to be projected on.

Distance is about reflecting on the past to give the possibility to move forward in the future. It is thinking through the histories of displacement forced upon First Nations within the Vancouver area, histories that are directly tied to my family and continue to affect us today. Distance is not only an interpretation of physical distance but also distance in time and memory. The memories of these moments live within the land, our bodies and spirit. The water, the land and its beings are witnesses to these histories and their bodies are affected just as much as ours from these colonial actions. Distance is a personal interpretation of the past, an imagining and sentiment to what it must have felt to have to live through these forcible acts of genocide and to hold and acknowledge these people I hold dear and to heal.

All We Want Is More: The Tobias Wong Project

On view until July 2023

Museum of Vancouver is proud to present the exhibition All We Want Is More: The Tobias Wong Project! In the early 2000s, Tobias Wong took the design world by storm. Born and raised in Vancouver, Wong was a brilliant and prolific artist whose career was all too short. Defying easy categorization, his work was wide ranging, pushing and dissolving disciplinary boundaries between conceptual art, performance and product design.

This exhibition is an invitation to revisit Wong’s artistic contribution with fresh eyes. Recent social, environmental and technological events have transformed the way we see the world and inevitably the way we see Tobias Wong’s work.

Foncie’s Corner

Where stories & time intersect

"My father and mother (Ian and Bella MacLean) spent most of my childhood in logging camps in the Queen Charlotte Islands. On special trips to Vancouver it was a chance to dress up, and thanks to Foncie, we have these special memories."

Foncie's Corner is an evolving photo exhibition and archive of photos taken by Foncie Pulice. Explore the current collection and add to it by submitting your photos. We encourage you to include heart-felt personal stories of life, death, trauma and joy, that when experienced together tell a larger historic story of life in British Columbia from the 1930s to the end of the 70s.
