October 2022

Hello {First & Last Name},

Here's the latest information about things going on in the Borough of Pompton Lakes this month, assembled and produced by the Public Information Department.

Mayor's Message

I would like to thank everyone involved in making summer activities fun, safe and enjoyable for all our residents!

Summer Camp was successful and the campers experienced fun filled children activities and presentations. National Night Out was well attended and provided residents with ways to stay healthy and safe along with free food, fire truck water spray and games. Pompton Day was a great success and I thank the volunteers who organized the event and assisted during the day. The event included the annual 5K Run, food and craft vendors as well as the dunk tank competition, the kayak boat race, wrestlers and the petting zoo. Pompton Day would not be complete without the spectacular fireworks display.

I remind everyone school is in session to be alert when driving and I urge motorist to be mindful of children walking and bicycling to and from school. I thank our many crossing guards who are out there every day assuring the safety of our schoolchildren and pedestrians.  Obey the law and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks.

Through grant funding, an All-Inclusive Artwork Picture Frame Statue has been installed at Lakeside Park to compliment the all-inclusive playground equipment. Residents have enjoyed taking photos/selfies of themselves, friends and family.  The Trails Committee and volunteers continue to maintain the trails and those who wish to volunteer should refer to the website. The Borough will be receiving and planting ten Red Bud trees through City Green grant funding.

October and November will be busy months as there are various town activities as follows; the Annual Town Wide Garage Sale scheduled for Saturday October 1, 2022 (with a rain date of Sunday, October 2, 2022) and is free to our residents (no permit necessary); the Chamber of Commerce Car Show is Sunday October 9, 2022; Fire Prevention Week begins on October 10, 2022; the Recreation Committee sponsors a Halloween Hunt and is scheduled for October 23, 2022 at the Tennis Courts at 7:00pm; Veteran’s Day Ceremony is scheduled for November 9, 2022 at Borough Hall and will begin at 6:30pm and all are welcome as we honor our Veterans; November 12, 2022 is the Free Rabies Clinic scheduled from 1:00pm through 3:00pm at the Fire House.

Some reminders -- leaf season begins this month and once a week garbage pickup is in effect starting October 13th. Also, please abide by the regulations for the collection of recyclables and solid waste trash. All trash should be in containers with tight secure lids that have the capacity of no more than 45 gallons nor weigh more than 60 pounds.

Until next time -- stay safe and enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Mayor Michael Serra

Spotted Lanternfly Continues to Swarm North Jersey

The Spotted Lanternfly (Loycorma delicatula) is a planthopper insect native to parts of Asia – the adults being approximately one (1) inch in length and ½ in width. It was first observed in the United States in 2014 and has spread over the Northeast. Its preferred host is also native to China – the Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima – but they also prey on red maple trees, grapevines, and over 70 additional tree species and plants. They damage and sometimes kill their host and are considered an invasive insect.

The greatest threat it poses is to crops and ornamental plants. Spotted Lanternflies feed on the sap of their host plants and trees. Their sticky, sweet excrement attracts additional insects, and the resulting black sooty mold is extraordinarily difficult to remove from cars or other items near the host tree.

In its early life cycle, it can be easily controlled by spraying it with a vinegar solution. Later in its life cycle, a more potent insecticide will have to be used. Insecticidal soaps, Neem oil, and pyrethrins present biological and environmentally acceptable means of control.

Residents can go to www.badbug.nj.gov or Spotted Lanternfly (nj.gov) for treatment options and more information. Another way to control the Spotted Lanternfly is to remove its favorite host, all Trees of Heaven, from the vicinity of your home.
