What Now?

In 1904 ---

* The average life expectancy in the US was 47 years.

* Only 14% of the homes in the US had a bathtub.

* Only 8%of the homes had a telephone.

* A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11.00

* There were only 8,000 cars in the US, and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

* Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

* The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

* The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.

* The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

* A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year. A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

* More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.

* 90 % of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."

* Sugar cost four cents a pound.

* Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

* Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

* Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

* Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.

* The five leading causes of death in the US were:

Pneumonia and influenza, Tuberculosis, Diarrhea, Heart disease, and Stroke

* The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

* The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!

* Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.

* There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

* 20% US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 % of all Americans had graduated high school.

* Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."

* 18% of households in the US had at least one full-time servant

* There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire US

October Art

October Afterglow 1880, by John A. Grimshaw

John Atkinson Grimshaw (6 September 1836 – 13 October 1893) was an English Victorian-era artist best known for his nocturnal scenes of urban landscapes. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by the critic and historian Christopher Wood in Victorian Painting.

Grimshaw's love for realism stemmed from a passion for photography, which would eventually lend itself to the creative process.

Though entirely self-taught, he is known to have used a camera obscura or lenses to project scenes onto canvas, which made up for his shortcomings as a draughtsman and his imperfect knowledge of perspective.

James McNeill Whistler, whom Grimshaw worked with in his Chelsea studios, stated, "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures."

The Temple of All Religions.

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

The Temple of All Religions or the Universal Temple is a unique architectural complex in Staroye Arakcino Microdistrict of Kazan, Russia. It consists of several types of religious architecture including an Orthodox church, a mosque, and synagogue, among others.

It is currently under construction since 1992, started by local artist and philanthropist Ildar Khanov. The structure serves as a cultural center and a residence for Khanov and his assistants.

Khanov is known for his efforts in the treatment of alcoholismdrug addiction, and various other diseases. Patients help him to maintain and develop the Temple, either by direct involvement in the construction work or through sponsorship.

The structure is not an active temple of any religion, but rather, as Khanov describes its mission, a "temple of culture and truth".

It has become a popular landmark in the city of Kazan, which takes pride in the peaceful combination of different cultures (Islamic Tatar culture, Orthodox Russian, and others). There are influences culled from Jewish synagogues and Islamic mosques with spires and bells! The Temple is visited both by tourists and by people seeking Khanov's help.

Khanov says that eventually the structure will have 16 cupolas, corresponding to the 16 major world religions including past religions that are no longer practiced. Khanov passed away in 2013 but work continues to bring his dream to fulfillment.

The Great Halloween Hoax

On a Halloween night in 1938, a large portion of people in the United States thought aliens were actually attacking the planet because of a radio program of WAR OF THE WORLDS told by film, radio and play director Orson Welles as a news report.

People were looting stores, massing small armies, boarding up their houses and gathering in churches. Despite hearing this news, Welles did not want to stop the program or alert anyone that it was a show. “Six minutes after we’d gone on the air, the switchboards in radio stations right across the country were lighting up like Christmas trees.

Houses were emptying, churches were filling up; from Nashville to Minneapolis there was wailing in the street and the rending of garments. Twenty minutes in, and we had a control room full of very bewildered cops. They didn’t know who to arrest or for what, but they did lend a certain tone to the remainder of the broadcast.

We began to realize, as we plowed on with the destruction of New Jersey, that the extent of our American lunatic fringe had been underestimated.” — Orson Welles on his War of the Worlds broadcast, which took place 85 years ago.

A Bit of Poetry

The voice of forest water in the night,

A woman’s laughter in the dark, the clean

Hard rattle of raked gravel, the cricketing stich

Of midday in hot meadows,

The delicate web of children’s voices in bright air

           These things will never change

The glitter of sunlight on roughened water,

The glory of the stars, the innocence of morning,

The smell of the sea in harbors, the feathery blur

And smoky buddings of young boughs

And something there that comes and goes and never

Can be captured

The thorn of spring, the sharp and tongueless cry

These things will always be the same

All things belonging to the earth will never change

The leaf, the blade, the flower the wind that cries

And sleeps and wakes again,

The trees who stiff arms clash and tremble in the dark,

and the dust of lovers long since buried in the earth

All things preceding from the earth to seasons

All things that lapse and change and come again

Upon the earth

These things will always be the same

They go back into the earth that last forever.

Only the earth endures

but it endures

forever.
